I would guess average, i've only been going to the one garage for 3 1/2 years since moving from Melbourne. I checked old receipts but they only have a total labour cost with no indication of hours spent... I would imagine the ultratune's to be around 80ish & the high-overhead dealerships to be 130ish. Guessing, mind you...
As per my post on the 1st page, i would now have the injectors, fuel filter and HPFP (high pressure fuel pump) checked. HPFP failures are not a terribly common occurrence on these engines, but i have heard of several giving issues (especially in early models like 2009 and 2010) in fuel delivery which causes misfiring. One of my friends had his HPFP fail on his Mk6 GTI and it took the mechanic a while to diagnose - the car still ran but it was misfiring and was down on power.
Basically after he did the rear main Seal, the thing was still misfiring. They then ran a smoke machine through it to see if they could find any other vacuum leaks, and they did. Some sort of hose underneath. The part from VW was $180~, and they couldnt source a generic one.
The car now doesn't misfire, and the engine light is gone. I was hoping I'd get a noticeable improvement in the way the car drives with the manifolds being cleaned etc, but not really. It drives alright anyway...
I did also notice that the power steering seems a bit noisy now.. could be cause its hardly been driven in ages? Maybe once the fluid gets pumped in there a bit it'll settle? I'll see how I go with a bit more driving for a couple of days...
Good to hear the issue has been fixed. The leaky hose may be one of the intercooler hoses - as they are quite renown for leaking at the joins. Did the car make any high pitch noises while driving (common noise if boost is leaking from a pipe).
As for the power steering - it should be electric (the same engine in my Mk6 Golf is electric anyway) which means no fluid.
I'll see how things go with the power steering. It could just be paranoia on my part.
Truth be told, you would probably only hear the high pitch squeal (air leaking - think of letting air out of a balloon slowly) if you put your foot down a bit to get the turbo working. If you were just pottering around a carpark or up and down the street you would probably not hear it. But the engine wouldn't have been happy having air leaking as it has accounted for that air via the air flow meter, and then some of that air escapes via the leaky pipe.
Sounds like you needed the rear main seal fixed anyway, and although it was a bit of a painful exercise, at least you have a new PCV out of this whole ordeal too.
And the Saga continues. Now the transmission seems to be slipping between gears on gear changes. Happens temperamentally, especially when accelerating higher. When it's happening bad stopping and starting the car seems to fix it temporarily.
