Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Timing belt, when to change in 2010 diesel?

Done a lot of searching, found nothing conclusive, am I jumping the gun if I get it done at 100000km? When are others doing theirs?

105,000kms or 7 years is the official word from Volkswagen Australia.

Do the idler pulley, tensioner and water pump while you're at.

Looking for a bit more mechanical aptitude.

Cheers mate. Will do it then. Can't recall if it was the manual or forums but 125000kms was stated mainly, but saw 100000 also. None seemed concrete. 105 sounds good.

Won't be either of those anyway, as they don't line up to the 15K service intervals.

Good point, it should be aligned to the VW service intervals. You're best calling a few dealers and asking the question, hopefully you get a consistent answer!

Maybe you are but in the front pages of each of my two VW service books ( Not the Owners manual) it states very clearly at what K's to check and also when to replace the belt. I have no doubt it will say the same in yours.

But then I suppose its easier to just ask on here and get several different answers which may or may not be correct.

Mate no true aussie bloke ever reads the instructions!

To be fair to the OP, this is a forum for sharing info, and the owners manual is pretty verbose...

The owners manual is very generalised, and isn't specific to the Australian market which has its own unique service schedule.

Perhaps someone may have said manual says 125 but mine snapped at 115 so go earlier etc etc etc. I ask questions on forums to get knowledge from people's experiences. It's pretty easy to sift through those just expressing opinions vs those talking from experience. You can always ask more questions to find out. It's safe to presume if someone knows what a timing belt is they'd know what a manual is. Anyway, thanks for all the help, even suggesting the manual

Interesting... I wonder if the belts being fitted to the Australian tigs is any different to the belts being fitted to German tigs. I have a the 2010 tig and changed my belt at 175k. The recomendation is 180k or 5 years. I know that pre 2010 tigs the recomendation was 120k or 5 years.
