Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Sure, but the GPS won't work the Apple Maps in CarPlay, so you'll have to use their navigation system instead. Do you know what OS their software is based on and who is providing their Australian maps?

There has been talk about the ILX-007 already having a WiFi and Bluetooth chip on board, and this gives them a head start to take advantage of Apple removing the cable connection from CarPlay in the release of IOS 9. Not sure what has happened since that OS update has been released, but Alpine seemed to have the inside running.

It's been a while since I did my research, but I vaguely recall that Alpine have a climate display solution too - but perhaps it was for one of their other systems, and not the ILX-007e. I'm afraid I looked at a couple of units before deciding on the RNS-510, but this is an Alpine picture I stored in the research folder on my computer:

That looks pretty nice. Would really need to see one in action to really know how good the interface is.

Has anyone tried this on an MK6 GTI? It seems an easy plug and play installation.

I've installed the Kenwood carplay/android auto unit, great system, integrates well with the steering wheel controls, rear sensors and RVC. Requires a few add-ons for cambus, antenna etc. Great unit though, I looked at the Alpines but too limited with only apple support, the kenwood has android auto and google maps is excellent. Also if you don't plug the phone in you still get digital radio, USB, SD Card, CD/DVD, Spotify and Pandora apps, Mirrowlink, Blutooth etc etc.

I had it done at autobarn, I wouldn't recommend them they had a lot of trouble getting it installed (complaining the whole time about how terrible VW's are to work on), ended up setting off an airbag and my car was out of action for a few days, on the bright side they waived the install charges for their mistake so can't complain about that.

I got this for my Audi, way better solution as it integrates to the factory unit and you can play everything from your phone on the nav screen, i.e even TV shows/youtube etc

I did look at a lot of the integrated options, not sure I'd say they're way better, each options has its pros and cons, in the end I decided AA/Carplay is miles ahead of any in-car OS at the moment. I notice they don't mention the specs of the unit so I'd be surprised if it has a capacitive touch screen or a decent CPU.

It didn't seem to get much of a mention here but the RCD330+ with Carplay is OEM, can be had for under A$300 and is plug and play in most post 2007 VWs. It allows the use of the steering wheel controls no problem but the reversing camera needs a little fiddling from what i understand. There are self install videos for Golf MkVI and original Tiguan.

Only downside in my mind is the USB location in the front of the unit.

Think you misunderstood, that solution I posted integrates into the existing NAV unit in the car, it's not a new unit. For example in my Audi, I've got a cable in the console box, I just plug my phone into that and press a button on steering wheel and whatever is on the phone is mirrored on the screen. The audio comes out of the speakers as its connected via bluetooth.

I can use google maps, apple maps, youtube, stream live TV, basically anything you see on the phone you will see on the screen. Plus it charges your phone while it's connected. I think that's miles better than any carplay option which is limited to music and maps.
