  • What's going on with my CV joints??

Had a front wheel off late this afternoon & noticed all this grease had been dumped out of seemingly the other side of the CV joint... ! The boot itself seems ok & is intact & relatively grease-free, but feeling around the other side, my fingers got a nice coating of grease as well...

Car is showing no signs of anything any different in the way it drives or terrible CV joint sounds (i used to have a '79 Subaru wagon many years ago), & i only discovered this by accident. The last time it was in the 'shop' was around 4 months ago when i had a transmission/clutch issue. You can kind of see scratch marks around the metal bit at the top of the rubber boot & i'm wondering if that may have been removed & incorrectly replaced, or is it just wear & tear after 95000k's?

Anyone care to have a bit of a prognosis?

    Cheers.

Looks like it's leaking from the clamp, sometimes it does get weak.. Although you mentioned that there's marks on the clamp itself? Then they may have (don't know why they would need too) of taken the CV clamp off either by mistake or breaking it trying to pry the shaft out of the gearbox. A new CV boot kit will come with boot, clamps and grease which should hopefully get you out of trouble.

The boot could've been damaged when the CV was removed or reinstalled. It can happen from time to time. Maybe have it looked at by the dealer, and see if they will come to the party, and fix it?

Thanks, guys for replies. Forgot to mention before that my daughter borrowed the car a couple of weeks ago & smooshed that side into the kerb pretty good... Is that something that could be a cause?

No, I doubt it to be honest.

Going in tomorrow for a new ("refurbished") inner CV joint on passenger side. All the boots were deemed to be fine, just the casing itself on the inner joint had separated where the two metal sections join together. The refurbished unit looks brand new & was almost half the price of a newie, which apparently had to be ordered in from Germany if i wanted brand new... My old one goes in as an exchange unit for rebuilding for the next lucky customer who wants a less expensive option.
