Propeller Shaft Damper

Hi Everyone.

Just got my Tig back from a service and they've noted that the prop shaft has some play in it and it appears that the rubber damper for the shaft where it connects to the rear diff is perished.

Has anyone replaced one of these on a Tig before and know the P/N.

I get my car serviced by an independent because I'm in the country, they do a great job but I want to double check the part/replacement procedure for myself.

Ramee, I remembered that you did some work with your haldex system, did you touch this part and did yours have any play in it?

I've seen one go before. Not sure why. I've never seen the same part fail on other models like the R Line Golfs and Passats.

Part number should be 1K0521307A. Worth running this by your preferred VW dealer's parts department with your VIN to confirm, in case there's a revised version, or variation.

It's most likely 1 of 2 things that could have caused it.

1. A few months ago, a new exhaust was installed by a bunch of idiots and they managed to snag one of the brackets on the rim of it while it was spinning as there was a chunk missing out of the bracket and a gash mark on the exterior of it. I got it checked out at the time I discovered it and everything "seemed" ok and an adjustment was made to the exhaust.

2. Car is tuned (stage 2 APR) and I've used launch control quite a bit at the drags (not recently) but it could explain premature wear.

Ramee, I remembered that you did some work with your haldex system, did you touch this part and did yours have any play in it?

Sorry to hear about that Wynnston, but luckily it is not very expensive or hard job to fix it. My rubber couplings were ok when I did my work and there was no play in the rubber coupling itself. But there is a definite play in the center (middle) ball joint of the drive shaft to cope with suspension movements. I think you better get it fix soon as possible as this may cause drive shaft misalignment and failure of other parts.

Meantime you may completely remove the driveshaft and have some GTI style fun like I did. With stage 2 it is quite fun.

For the cause I think it is stage 2 tune is the one to get the blame. Stage 2 tune can create huge torques under low RPM with tiny k03 turbo and may create severe stress on drivetrain and transmission components so launching with it is not a very good idea. I also recommend an upgraded haldex controller as this make haldex system ready for high torque transmitting through it way before stock controller responds so less impulsive force when haldex kick in.

I hate those doggy exhaust places they act like experts but do a worst crappy job and don't care anything else under the car and complexity of these machines.

Thanks Ramee. I've pulled up a diagram and it shows one attached to the driveshaft and another to the rear diff, is this the case (is there two) or is it just one part which they are illustrating twice?

It is just a one part. Got Six holes in it, 3 bolts goes to flange in rear diff and other three (opposite direction) go the flange in drive shaft. Number 6 is the part you need

Also better replace all the bolts too as they are one time used (stretch bolts) and need a torque wrench for proper torque setting.
