Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Feedback/Assistance Needed - High Km's TDI

    Hi All

I'm looking into getting a Tiguan (diesel) and am wondering if there is any real concern in buying one that has high km's...If a solid and consistent service history is there and km's are mostly highway, is there any major concerns that Tiguan owners can highlight or point out that may give me some better insight into reliability and longevity?

Some helpful information as to what I'm looking at buying:
    - Auto transmission
    - Diesel
    - MY10+ with the white MFD
    - Comfort features e.g. Auto lights/Dimming Mirror/Climate Control
    - 150,000km's + as the car will be my to and from work car and then used for things that a new car shouldn't, like carting smelly dogs/fishing gear/kayak/sh*t in general. Light off road duties - nothing a smaller car couldn't handle
    - Towing a boat in the near future too

I've had a look at the sticky thread but no mention of high km diesel questions

Thanks in advance for any help

Main concerns I would think we be to make sure DSG service (if it is DSG, not sure where the changeover from torque converter auto was) has been carried out every 60k, and the DPF.

If it is truly all highway driving then DPF shouldnt be too much of a concern however the stored ash level can be checked with VCDS to be able to tell if it might be close to full (which would require replacement). Instructions here

Other than that just the usual checks, some actual Tiguan owners/mechanics probably have some more useful tips...

From memory the DSG changeover occured in 2011.

Kamold covered off on all the topics i believe.
Maybe check the Diesel section too, from memory the piezo injectors issue was only on the 125TDI engines.

What do you call high km? - More than 200,000?

From 150,000 upwards I suppose. I just don't see many people reporting on the performance at this amount of km's and above

My tig has now done 156,000 and still running like new. Will be looking at doing a timing belt in the next 10,000 or so (the book says 180,000 but I will be doing mine sooner). Oh, nearly forgot, mine has the 6sp manual gearbox. Hope this helps!

That "depends", both NZ and Ausi still get the occasional 6 speed non-dsg auto in various guises. My 2013 is 6 speed, that's why I bought it !!

Thanks everyone for the replies, I am just looking for reliability out of the Tiguan. If the car has followed the recommended service schedule, I would assume there's not a lot to worry about. Of course, any car I do buy will get inspected by a reputable independent. Just wanted some honest feedback from other owners before I get a sales pitch from a potential seller

Conventional auto needs to be serviced every 60,000kms as well.

I believe there was a shortage of 7 speed DSG boxes for a while and so they created the 132TSI Pacific and fitted it with the older conventional six speed auto box. This would have been around 2011 and probably sold into 2012. I don't think they were fitted to the diesels, but I could be wrong.

Supposedly a more reliable box, but much slower in the acceleration stakes and not as fuel efficient - and ignoring the fact that DSG issues on the Tiguan are few and far between with the DQ500.

As I said my 2013 diesel is 6 speed auto which is much better for any off road work. The DSG is better in many areas but off road, gravel, and towing aren't three of them !!

Also there's plenty of 6 speed autos still being built for the NA market as they don't have the DSG in Tiguan !!

                      Cheers
