Not a Tiguan - but i am currently removing a genuine VW (made by BestBar) towbar from a 2010 VW Golf. Im sure it's similar to the Tiguan.
The towbar replaces your OEM rear crash beam - so your OEM crash beam is no longer used.
As for the wiring, there are 2 parts:
- a wiring loom thats approx 1.2m in length with a black plug (this is the part that plugs into a module on the passenger side and runs down to the towbar to power the lights on the trailer)
- a wiring loom thats approx 4m in length with a red plug (and separate earth lead) at one end, and about 8 or so wires at the other end. The end with the red plug and earth plugs into the module in the passenger boot (unclip OEM red plug and plug in aftermarket red plug). The other end runs up to the drivers side dash. 3 red wires and a blue wire go into the fuse panel (and replace existing pins in this fuse panel) and the remainder of the wires go into the CECM (central electronics control module) which is also under the dash.
Yes the can bus is a bugger.. 3 plugs that need to be made into one. Chop and join is the way but not much room as stated above. I have made up a harness so you can plug them in but it costs $40 to make. Easy and less time but expensive....VDUB...

The part I still have not been confirmed from the supplier is the loom that goes from the socket at the bumper, to the control module. It does not seem to be included.

I will check my wiring tonight from the black box down to the towbar and see if these is a part number on it. Im not sure if the wiring is a VW item or made by BestBars though?
Slightly off topic, but seeing we have knowledge-able chaps like Umai Naa!! and vdubmotorworx in here - do either of you have details on the VCDS changes that need to be altered when adding a towbar?
As mentioned a few posts above, i am currently removing a BestBars (VW "OEM") towbar from my 2010 MK6 GTI. I have removed everything except for the few wires going into the CECM and also the fuse panel under the dash. Once i have those out - the removal will be complete. I would like to "undo" any VCDS changes that were altered to accomodate the towbar operation to avoid any errors.
In addition, i am planning to re-fit this towbar to another forum members Mk6 118TSI, and would like to know the VCDS changes to alter on his car too.
PS - here is the wiring into my fuse panel. The installer (Kloster VW in Newcastle i presume as thats where the car was bought new) removed the stock wires (popped the pins out and taped them up) and replaced with new pins for the new towbar specific wiring loom. Same goes with the wires into the CECM.
You need to get hold of the correct terminal pin tool to release the wires out of the connectors. That pink section of the connector slides sideways to "unlock" the terminals, then you use the tool release and push the terminal out.
With regards to the coding, go into the gateway, then into coding, and it's simply a case of selecting or deselecting the trailer electrics.
Comparing Golf VI to early Tiguan is like chalk and cheese with the wiring. Two different setups. Tiguan is much like Golf V. CANbus wires on the Golf VI go directly into the BCM.

Thanks for the details Umai Naa!! - thats what i was hoping for. I have the pin tool, but was not aware the pink bit moves over to unlock the pins....probably the reason why i hadnt been able to get the pins out. I'll try again in the morning.
Are there two plug configurations on pre-wired and non pre-wired Trailer Module kits?
Connecting the OEM trailer wiring module to the pre-wired red plug in left rear quarter panel only illuminates the parking light on the 7 pin flat socket. The VW service guy said when I had it coded that I had not connected the supplied long loom to the fusebox. I have the feeling that this dealership doesn't fit many (any) trailer wiring modules as they were quite confused when ordering the kit .
Are pre-wired loom and kit loom plugs/modules wired differently? I did not have a problem when I fitted my Skoda Yeti with the OEM module kit.
