  • Noisy after Stg 1 flash

I got the apr stg1 flash done about a week ago and just wanted to clarify some things with others that have had it done.

    • I'm finding it loads louder than it was. I'm getting lots of noise from what I believe tone the turbo,

    • since having it done it's actually less drivable at normal speeds, especially around town with traffic lights and roundabouts etc. I have noticed LOADS more hesitation when trying to speed up from slow rolling etc and I'm getting shudders in the low gears (by shudders I mean it's like it's starving for air and gurgles)

    • the car seems to be changing gear ever earlier that what it did and it's like it's really struggling from starting etc

I turned the tune off and went back to the standard tune and it's stops all of the above...is anyone else finding / noticing anything like this?

I'm concerned that it's damaging or not working as it should?

Would it be affecting my gear box? I certainly don't drive hard and have only really played hard with it once

Also is it normal for the fans to run for quite a while after turning the car off? My previous Tig didn't do it but this does

Have you talked to your tuner?

I suggest taking it back there first if possible.

Second question is what fuel are you using and what tune file is selected?

Certainly doesn't sound "normal". I'd be getting it checked out.

My 155TSI stock does this routinely. When the oil temp is high.

I haven't gone back to them as yet, I'll do it on a day not so hot so maybe they can test it out without the AC on.

I'm using 98 fuel and the 98 tune

Give it a quick thrash in Sport mode then see if it improves in D.

Noise does not sound normal, take the car back to tuner.

Re general hesitation, I'd suggest letting the tune settle in for couple of hundreds km or perhaps looking at a different set of coil packs later on.

Re 98 petrol, have you tried BP ultimate from a different servo?

Suggest you get back it touch with the tuner and get them to check for any fault codes and also log the car (which they should have done when they put the tune on).

If you have a misfire and need new coil packs I can get you a set of Audi R8 ones on the next group buy.

Let us know how you get on.

                  Thank you loads!

Wouldn't the coil pack be a warranty item though? Are the R8 ones better?

I'm going to call them tomorrow and hopefully drop in sometime Friday and see what they say

Is there anything that we, as tig owners (well I'm presuming all DSG) can do to get rid of the awful lag / slow response thing? Is it a DSG thing or engine thing that can be adjusted?

                  Thanks again everyone

Coil packs are a warranty item if they fail with the stock tune.... What people find running tunes is that the stock coils are not always 100% up to the job. It can be the occasional misfire or in worst case outright failure and shutdown of a cylinder.

The R8 coils are a stronger coil, give a stronger spark and to date I haven't heard of any failures with these. Unfortunately this is quite common with stock coils packs.

Regarding the lag, it's an accelerator issue. Or more correctly an issue with programming of the accelerator input. This can be fixed to a large degree by installing a Sprint Booster. Means you don't have to totally mash the pedal just to move off from the lights at a reasonable pace.

I've also got a DSG tune which also helps with kick-down in "D" plus allows the car to re-engage first gear while moving, though the sprint booster was still needed to get rid of the lag on moving off.

re. the DSG lag you can either look at a SprintBooster or get Guy Harding's DSG tune installed (the latter being the better long-term solution but more expensive).

I have the Stage 1 tune and the gear changes can be a little 'laggy' when puttering around town. Put it into Sport and this disappears. Love the tune, it is the best money I have ever spent on a car

Since my Stage1 tune it can be a bit jerky between gear changes during moderate acceleration, mainly 1-2 and 2-3. It seems like a calibration thing for the gearbox and the clutch pickup/pressure needs to be different. I just drive in manual or sport and it drives perfectly. It can be embarrassing if I have passengers but I learn to work around it. I think it's a lot to do with barely using those gears, I am on the open highway a lot. If I drive around the city during the day it plays up a bit, but after the first day it seems to learn or something.

D on the 7 speed stands for dog. To be fair, it's the same on most new transmissions. They want to be in the highest gear possible, the problem is that it can often make the car feel laggy. I think the best option is a DSG tune. As far as I know, the only one in AUS that's pretty straight forward is the Harding Performance one.

All that being said, the driveability was a little touch and go for the first few hundred kms then it either got better or I just got used to it. I would still consult your tuner, but you might just find that it comes good in a few hundred or so.

If it's just a louder whistle then it's fairly normal. The turbo is running ~ 6-8psi more boost so it will make more noise. If it's louder then you may have a leak in your intake/ic piping which could explain the performance issues.

So I have taken it back and was told the turn is fine ad there are no issues...

I have turned it off and driving in stock and it's 1000% better and more drivable so I'm taking it back for them to remove the tune.

Not sure if it's just me but I really don't enjoy it. Yes the power is great when the turbo kicks in but the jerkiness and then the take off in such a massive jerk is just not suitable for driving for me.

Disappointed overall but this is life

Thank everyone for your input on this topic

^ shame - perhaps try a different tune to see whether it makes a difference? Where are you based (city/state)?
