If the Tiguan is the same as an Octavia (probably is) then under light braking the rears come on earlier than the fronts to reduce the severity of the nose dive. If you tend to use your brakes sparingly (eg: you read the traffic flow & tend to coast up to the lights rather than rush up & brake at the last moment) then the rears will wear quicker than the fronts. I'm at 125,000km & the fronts are about 80%, the rears 40%.Originally posted by Tiggy1 View PostJust had my 45k service and my brakes still had 90% left on the front and 60% on the rear, which was a pleasant surprise - although seems odd that rears more worn than front?!

What's with Tiguans an rotor replacement, or any new car for that matter, what happened to machining discs, can't think of any car that I've had that needed the disc rotors thrown out and replaced with a new set before being machined, new pads yes but not new rotors, are the vw disc so thin to begin with?
Having said that my independent VW/Audi mechanic told me at the last yearly service I would need new discs soon,WTF, I courteously declined and said I would get back to him when needed, plenty of meat left in the discs, just had last yearly service last month to break down the costs of pending 60,000 service probably due in a couple of months again rotor replacement mentioned(actually I brought it up) but still a fair bit of meat left in the rotor, am I missing something or are modern car rotors junk to begin with?sigpic

Standard for a Euro vehicle. Mercs, VWs, Volvos, etc have been like that for 40 years.Originally posted by cubes View PostWhat's with Tiguans an rotor replacement, or any new car for that matter, what happened to machining discs, can't think of any car that I've had that needed the disc rotors thrown out and replaced with a new set before being machined, new pads yes but not new rotors, are the vw disc so thin to begin with?

The rotors are too soft to machine. By the time you machine them down to an even surface, they'll most likely be close to undersized.Originally posted by cubes View PostWhat's with Tiguans an rotor replacement, or any new car for that matter, what happened to machining discs, can't think of any car that I've had that needed the disc rotors thrown out and replaced with a new set before being machined, new pads yes but not new rotors, are the vw disc so thin to begin with?

In a nutshell, they're designed to wear with the pads, and being soft, provide optimal breaking performance.'07 Transporter 1.9 TDI

Hard pads and soft discs as opposed to the opposite on cars from 20 years ago.Originally posted by cubes View PostWhat's with Tiguans an rotor replacement, or any new car for that matter, what happened to machining discs, can't think of any car that I've had that needed the disc rotors thrown out and replaced with a new set before being machined, new pads yes but not new rotors, are the vw disc so thin to begin with?

That's the price you pay for better brake performance.

three replies all concise, thanks that answers that, having said that my DBA5000 disc rotors on my wrx did take machining twice using a race style pad(4 spot calipers) and did offer optimal braking, they're due for replacement any time but still brake well with a lip and with multiple grooves reminiscent of clay on a potters wheel
, I don't know to me throwing out your discs and pads just seems redundant in thinking.
