Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • How long your battery last?

Mine is getting weak, and I couldnt start the car today. My car has been manufactured at the end of 2009, but it is a MY2010 release (March).

Is this normal? I thought the original batteries would last 5-6 years.

From my own experience, about 2.5 years.

Ordinarily, you can have it replaced under warranty.

But it looks like you've just missed out.

My first Tiguan TDI bought in June 2008 was still on it's original Varta battery made in Germany in Dec 2012 when I sold it. My BMW 320d built in June 2006 and registered in May 07 is still on it"s original "BMW" battery made for BMW by Sabat South Africa. My previous BM's all lasted on average 4 years but this latest one has been exceptional

When I got stuck in Febuary, I ended up having to call NRMA to replace the battery. They came out replaced the battery and checked the charging, and took away the old battery.

If you drive mainly short trips, the battery will have low capacity most of the time and it will shorten its life. Charging the battery to full capacity every 2months or so, using a smart charger like CTEK, may extend the battery life. I expect to get at least 4 years out of the battery.

Original Jetta Battery is 7+ years old and still going strong although it is used mainly around town and used on short trips…

My Mums Barina is 12+ and used similarly - still on the original too but I think it is on the way out…
