  • Thinking of buying tiguan. Diesel or petrol

Hi all, I'm thinking of buying a tiguan as family car. It will be driven around town in Canberra and sometimes Canberra to Sydney or sometimes up to port Macquarie. I'm tossing between petrol or diesel.
How much k's for full tank of fuel, common problem with both cars and other issue to look for in the car?

    Thanks

Diesel particulate filter can fill up with ash so i would use Morey's DPF additive, also diesel conditioner seems to help.

The other addition people get is a Catch-can setup to remove the oil sludge from the exhaust system.

Have a read of the diesel section for some ideas.

Highly dependant on what you want.

If you want fuel efficiency, diesel is a no brainer.

If you want performance (like I did), petrol is the go. Additionally because it is far more tunable.

But that being said, I get around 8.4L/100 and am not super impressed with this (I used to get 10.1L/100 out of a v8 holden ute)

Go and drive both and see what you think

I think that as your user-name has the word 'revhead' in it, you need the petrol with a tune!

good call MGV. personally I would have petrol hands down, but this is for the mrs and school run. Downsizing from V6 tribute to 4 cylinder.

Just wondering for the petrol owner car. How man k's do you get in full tank of petrol around town, in average.

Remember the petrol engines run on 98 octane. Filling up the 65 litre tank on the Tig is about $100 these days. I'll usually get about 500km on a tank of city driving and 700km or so on the highway.

Really depends on how heavy your foot is.

Hi - in my 147 petrol (using 98 octane) I get around 620km around Canberra and from here to Sydney I have got 820km + I don't have a heavy foot - not too bad. Common problem with the cars? - probably the dealers themselves (in Canberra anyway) as they really have no idea about the product they sell so buy one and take it to someone who does - there's a couple of great shops in Canberra

I'm about the same. Around 10 or 11 l/100k in peak hour commute, around 7.8 - 8 out on the highway. Reckon a diesel would beat that by 10%. I have a TSI with stage 1 tune.

Currently have a 125TSI with stage 1 tune and average around 620km a tank on purely commuting with a little fun thrown in. If I was softer on the loud pedal, I'm sure that'd improve. I've seen 750km before fill on a long country run. The only reason I opted for the petrol over diesel was the ability to tune. For the wife, we're actually just awaiting delivery of new diesel Tig. Although she loves driving mine, she's more than happy with the diesel power and prefers the economy.

If I was paying for petrol (rather than company fuel card), I'd definitely consider the diesel. Though would have to drive one first.

I'm getting about 6.8L/100km in my Diesel DSG Tiguan. Around 800kms/tank is typical for me, though we'd stretched it out a couple of times on the highway.

I test drove the petrol before buying the diesel, the petrol was certainly fun to drive, but with its behaviour there was no way I'd have achieved acceptable economy with it.

Really it depends on how much importance you give the fuel costs as to what you get.
