Did my second 9w2 installation yesterday in half the time i took to do the first one. Like tigger 73 i installed both units under the drivers seat so if issues happen they are easily accessible.
In both cases I managed to run the mic wire to the roof light without removing the A pillar trim as I understand you need to replace the old lugs on the trim with new ones according to the official manual.

Also had issues joining up the canbus wires to the quad connector at the back took time to remove the original metal connectors and join the wires but it looks rather neat with no splices.
BTW can anyone tell me why the 2 CANbus wires are twisted together?

Coding was required for both units but this was a mere formality as I was given some coding instructions by the ebay seller. Bluetooth streaming works well as well as the basic telephone in call reception. Not bad value for $200 each considering what dealers were quoting me for a year ago to do much the same.

I imagine if I did it a second time I would do it a lot quicker too.

Getting those wires out of the quad connector is a real PITA. Took me ages as I had to remove 4 of them. I am sure there must be a special tool which does it in seconds. I had my jewellers screwdriver out to try and press the tabs in wile trying to extract the wire. Finally managed to get them out with quite a bit of coaxing.

The reason the CANbus wires are twisted together is to reduce interference/RFI/EMI/crosstalk. Theory is that both conductors are effected the same and this has a cancelling effect if used in comms where you are looking at the difference in levels between the two wires (not the absolute value).

All up my upgrade from RCD310 / basic bluetooth to RCD510 / advanced bluetooth cost $400 (once you take into account selling the original RCD310/bluetooth unit).

Definitely worthwhile and will pay for itself in not getting a fine for using a mobile phone while driving....

Now I can receive and make calls from steering wheel buttons and the RCD510 display.

The other feature that I used this morning was that the RCD510 will tell you if your phone is not paired - went out this morning without my mobile, but realised by the corner I didn't have it as there was no pairing on the display. Gave me tiem to double back and get it off the kitchen bench.

That's one feature nobody tells you about - helpful for the forgetful.

Thanks for the enlightenment re the twisting of the CANbus wires
According to a WinELSA VW do make a tool to remove those lugs it's part of a splicing kit they use to repair faulty looms but I am not sure they sell it to the public perhaps someone out there can enlighten us as I had a few choice words to say yesterday when undertaking the task!

I think I found the tool to make the job easier:

Also ran the bluetooth cable from the dash to underneath the drivers seat where I've installed the bluetooth unit as there wasn't enough room inside the dash to fit the larger 9w7 unit.

Was hoping that I could re-use the microphone/cable from the existing unit but turns out it was hard wired into the connector block for the old bluetooth unit. So had to pull off the trim and rerun the microphone cable also.

Where have you ran the BT cable, under the central tunnel (on the side of the gearbox) or under the drivers door sill? Do you have some photos of the process?

Same question for the microphone, where have you ran the cable? Under the A pillar trim?

A lot cleaner and neater in my mind!

But yeah, fingers crossed no future need to reboot BT unit.

Took a bit of effort to make room for it, with all connectors and harness pushed to the left hand side and directly behind the glove box area.

But it is physically possible to fit module directly behind the climatronic!

Do need to remove the trim around it, but don't have to remove the climatronic itself.
Only clips and one screw holds the surrounding climatronic trim which is concealed behind the anti-slip mat, in the storage hole.

Unlike in the Golfs where there's so much room that cable ties are needed to prevent the module moving around and rattling, it's very snug and won't move in the Tig. Well certainly in my MY11.
Do you have some photos of how the BT module fit behind the climatronic?

Since there isn't much room to install the module in the dash, have you got problem due to temperature with the module or the radio being warm?

How did you manage to install the microphone without remove the A pillar trim? Have you ran the microphone cable along the A pillar trim, externally? Do you have some photos of the process?

Just push the wire under the trim - pull the seal back from around the door frame and you should be able to push it under without removing the trim.

Have not had any issues with heat and everything is in working order.

Unfortunately no pics taken at the time.

Like I said ... the key to making room is to sort of move the existing harness wires on the RNS510 to one side.
There is plenty of room on the left hand side and behind the glove box.

NOTE: Only tricky if you have the whole kit and caboodle wired up to the RNS510.

I have a puck GPS antenna, RVC tapping into the existing RNS510 wiring harness for power to navigate around when fitting the BT module.
