      As per http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...ecs-83808.html - $110 pick-up in Adelaide or $125 shipped Australia-wide

You can run them in standard engine but probably more for guys with a tune (as this is when issues seem to arise with the stock ones).

Didn't run with anymore power but it seems to be smoother in revving and idle. Mind you I think my stock coil packs had an issue so probably more noticeable for me.

Apart from the red colour which is good for 5kW itself, the stronger spark won't really have a noticeable effect on engine output.

Yeah wasn't expecting more power, just wanted to fix the dead spot when revving that was iddentified as a coil issue after getting the stage 1 tune.

No problems. Glad you got it sorted

I replaced the revision A (06H 905 115 A) coil packs as a preventive measure, and immediately the car picks up rev much quicker, specially off idle.

Which means I have been driving around with a dying coil pack(s) for the last 20000km without realising it......

Not sure if your coil packs were dying but the R8 ones do give a stronger spark which can help with combustion.

Does stronger spark mean spark plugs wear out sooner?

I don't believe so. Just means you get a bigger spark each time and tends to ignite the fuel better.

Where you run into problems is when the coil pack doesn't create a large enough voltage to jump across the gap and then obviously you don't get a spark/ignition.

You still have to have the right fuel/air mix so if you run too lean you'll end up with a hotter flame (and possible singe things). If you're too rich you'll get a sooty build-up.

Took my Tig in to VW to check out an ECP fault and was told that it was a coil pack failure. They didn't have any in stock and needed to order one in. Tig just turned two years old the other week and had 60,000 KMs. No tune or performance mods done yet, was holding out for a sale with APR.

Hopefully they replace the complete set. Ideally all coil packs should be "matched" - same with spark plugs.

When I had one go they only replaced the single coil pack because my car was "tuned" (they usually will replace the set).

I actually don't understand this logic. Either the tune caused the problem and it's not covered or it didn't cause the problem and they should replace the set.

Anyway they ended up replacing a series "A" coil pack with a series "B" and left the other 3 as series "A".

I took the opportunity to replace the lot with the R8 coil packs as I didn't trust the others. I now carry them as spares - just in case.

Got the car back today and the dealer only swapped out the faulty ignition coil. Oh well. I'll probably to do the same and get some spares in the trunk.

Well, it didn't take long. Cylinder 3 started misfiring on the drive home today (previously it was cylinder 4 with the faulty ignition coil). Will have to contact the dealer again to book the car in.

So now I'm thinking of holding off on getting the APR tune in case there is an underlying engine issue.
