Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Reversing sensor still operates with trailer attached.

    Hi All,
so, I got the reversing sensor (beep-beep) and the mega-expensive towbar included as options on my new MY11 (which is now 9 months old, but the love affair continues...)
I only towed my boat for the first time over the weekend. The MFD gave me a trailer light warning, which I fixed by unplugging and reconnecting the trailer connection. Problem was, the reversing beeper went off whenever I was in reverse gear (with the trailer attached). I thought it was supposed to be turned off when a trailer was connected?!

Anyway, had to take the car in for the battery cable recall yesterday, so I mentioned the problem to the service manager. He took a look at the rear bumper, mumbled soemthing about "genuine but non-factory reversing sensors", and basically said "bad luck, put up with the beeping while backing up a trailer"! WTF? Given that the reversing sensors and towbar were ordered options on a brand new car, shouldn't they work as expected? Obviously the car can detect the presence of the trailer (MFD brake light warning), but what he's implying is that it can't over-ride the reversing beeper?

Can anybody confirm that the beeper does in fact get over-ridden when reversing a trailer? I'm not real happy with the "get over it" attitude of the service manager (which, by the way, is where I bought the vehicle).

    Thanks,
    John.

Hi John - I have the MY11 147 with the same problem although it has been half resolved after intervention from VWA. Apparently the first of the MY11's had the reverse sensors fitted after the factory - there's a thread somewhere on this, anyway my towbar wiring was way out and the lights only half worked - great pre-delivery, anyway this was only resolved by the fitment of a control module which has been placed in the rear, right hand side flap - well I think it is as the flap fell down as I drove out so presume this is it, this fixed my dash light warning light coming on as soon as I plugged in the trailer but the second half of my problem was the cancelling of the reverse sensors when reversing with the trailer hooked up - there are some codes that need to be entered so still waiting for the dealer (ha-ha) to ring me back. VWA rang me last week to check that all was complete after the dealer said it was so VWA will be ringing me back to check shortly...ring up and complain to VWA as this is the only way to get anything done, sad but true. If my tiggy gets fixed I will let you know

For what it's worth my reversing senors DO switch off (fronts are still active though) and I get NO bulb out warnings etc BUT when I first got it I did have a bulb out warning issue which we fixed eventually. In NZ trailers are built with a single side-light wire but the Tig was set up with a left and a right so in the end I put a second wire on my trailer. I don't this issue is still there as I haven't heard of it since though ( mine is a 2008 ).

I suspect that either your coding is incorrectly done or they did a cheap jack wiring job without the required module !!

        Cheers

Apologies for hijacking but it seems an appropriate thread. Sorry to hear about your trailer woes and fingers crossed I don't encounter any problems when we pickup our new car. Would a sure fire way of checking to make sure the appropriate black box was installed would be to pull a globe on the trailer and make sure this is reported on the MFD? I'm assuming that if its not hooked up correctly I won't get any warning.

I find it sad that a car company with such a good reputation for making cars has such (what it seems) a largely untrained dealership that you can't rely on to do even something as simple as installing a towbar. Do these guys even have manuals for doing this type of work, I mean follow steps A thru Z and test. Maybe I'm being unfair and its only a few that are over representing the problems out there.

There's a switch? Not in my MY11 125TSi - well not that I'm aware of, anyway!

and not in my MY11 147TSI either - have a small round plastic thing directly above the Climate control but it doesn't do anything - tried backing up to a wall so the buzzer would stay on but nothing - I thought it was a sensor or something - the gumbees at the dealership never said anything about it so they obviously don't know either

My theory is that the "round plastic thing" is a cabin temperature sensor for the climate control system. If I put my finger on it for a while, the air coming out of the vents seems to blow colder (because the climate control thinks the cabin has heated up)...

Mine does, second from the left. How do you guys switch your front sensors "on" if you're going straight into a carpark ? or do you not have front sensors ? Mine are front and rear and turn on automatically if you hit reverse but you switch them on manually if you're going straight into a park without using reverse.

No front sensors on a 147 without park assist, hence no buttons with a P on them like your 2nd and 3rd from the left.
The rear sensors are turned on / off by selecting / deselecting reverse so no separate switch is required or fitted.

Hi , I had the same issue with my My 09 147TSI when I picked it up . Didn`t find out about it until the first time that I used the trailer.

Now I can only speak about the MY09 ... The dealer connected up his diagnostic computer and made some adjustments in the vehicle computer to include the tow bar option.

Now when I connect a trailer the display in the RCD510 shows that a trailer is connected to the back of the vehicle (when I reverse only) and stops the beeping.
It is also supposed to adjust the vehicle stability system (?) to control any trailer sway that may occur.

Also if I touch the back button on the display it stops the beeping / optical display and reverts back to the radio.

While there is mention of trailer sway & stability systems, does anyone know if the system is trailing the rear brakes the whole time, or only if sway is detected? I kind of feel as though the brakes wear out quick enough as it is, without the stability system trying to wear them quicker...
