Plugged my new iPhone 4 into the MDI cable today using the white cable supplied with the iPhone and I get a message saying the device is not recognised. What's the go there? Am I doing something wrong?

yeah i get the message 'this device is not optimised' or something along those lines, I guess the recent MDI update may fix that issue but I was provided with a iphone and usb cable so I just went with a USB stick and never bothered to investigate, but yes its not only you..
also see
"•The MDI interface with my iPhone -- always says it's "not optimised for this device" and will often confuse track titles or not play the first few seconds of the track. "
-- > http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f112...ead-48234.html
and found this on another forum
"This warning is normal, just disregard it, it just means that VW didn't pay Apple bags full of money for certification (rubber stamp)
I get the same message on my iPhone 4 when using in my car. "Last edited by Vaku; 13-05-2011, 12:37 PM.

Hi,
you can't use the standard USB-iPod cable. You need to buy the MDI-iPod adapter cable - and even then, good luck! (see my topic re RNS510, iPod skipping in the audio section of the forum). I thought the USB-iPod cable should work, too - because it does with other head units (Pioneer etc) in other cars.
The "genuine" MDI-iPod cable is about $90, but you can get it "online" for around $30...
regards,
John

I personally refuse to consider ANYTHING with a lower case 'i' in front of it..... Sony Walkman MP3 is great, HTC Desire does more than i'll ever need, Toshiba laptop at home, will definately consider their tablet later in the year before any 'i' related product..... :associated unapproving emoticon: ...Current: MY18 TRANSPORTER CrewVan, Indium Grey

But back to the MDI problem - who can positively say they have a cable and it works? If so, where did you get it from?
Does it charge the iPhone while plugged in?

I use both an iPod Touch and a 3GS iPhone, and they have no difficulty working through the VW-supplied iPod Cable and factory-fitted MDI. Mind you, I still haven't worked out how to navigate the songs properly but neither have I spent much time trying yet. I do get the 'Not Optimised Message' but no functions appear to be affected - phone or iPod both charge with no problem.sigpic MY2011 Tiguan 103 TDi 7spd-DSG, Deep Black Pearl Effect, Comfy Pack, MDi, OEM Tow Package, Tint - LOVE this car!

Should I? If so I'll go back to the dealer and ask for it. We did have a few issues with them in terms of service and attention so just another small issue to the list.

A lot of people will make that mistake (including myself admittedly)!
In the flashy brochure, they always picture an iPod connected.
Fcuken ... they don't tell you that what you get is just the USB cable as standard when you tick the MDI box.
It's basically false advertising if you ask me!
When ordering you basically need to be very specific and negotiate for an iPod cable, instead of the standard USB one that comes with this option!
As stealer will charge you at least $65 and I've seen as high as $85 over at Wally World for it @ Spares!
I'd suggest you buy it here instead:
Volkswagen MEDIA IN - 000051446C
But please do yourself a favour and ask them to confirm that it is compatible with the iPhone4.
