Maybe something to consider is service costs of the bmw, I know that my mum's 120d is pretty costly... and don't get run flats if they offer them (i don't think they do for the x1) because they are expensive and pointless. Otherwise let us know hoe it drives,i am really interested!

If cargo space is not a consideration then the Tig is the car to buy - but there is not much more space than the Golf hatch. We are most likely going with a Golf wagon after looking at all the small SUV's

There are a few getting around here. They look much better in pictures than in the flesh driving along - the fronts look pinched and narrow, and the rear is worse. They look like a Korean ripoff of a BMW that's gone wrong

And you'd have to buy the 6cyl, I'd never, never touch a 4 cyl BMW.

You speak to soon clip .... next gen 3 series due Q3 this year will finally have a 4 cyl 2.0 turbo petrol to rival (and make more power than) the VW 2.0Ts .... and it will flow through to the X3s and X1s eventually.

Next 1 series (due 2012) with RWD and 2.0T will be the ultimate entry hatch .... probably even outdo the R .....

that won't be hard, but still only be a marketing exercise- as they've always been, for people that want the badge but can't afford the real thing

Renault Koleos.I seriously considered one of these as I had been a Renault fan in my earlier years,R8,R10,R12.
The Koleos looks the goods, has all the fruit, but then I found out it was manufactured by Samsung in Korea. Doh! no thanks.
I am very happy with my Tig tdi dsg.

Took the X1 sdrive 18i for a test drive, was impressed with the overal ride and build quality was typical BMW although i felt the car was very underpowered. As stated one can be had for under $50k but would be pretty basic on the spec sheet so we have decided against it.

After visiting BMW we went for another look at VW. Am glad to say that after her initial dislike for the Tiguan the wife has finally come to realise that the Tig is actually pretty good value and is now at the top of her list. Now the problem is trying to get hold of one close to the spec we want as most seem to have been sold due to the driveaway special VW are having. The search will continue next week so hopefully there will be two VW's parked in our garage in the near future.

I was having this exact conversation yesterday with my brother in-law. He's been looking at everything and especially the BMW because he's always wanted one, and now they're cheap etc etc - but even he is admitting that the Tig is the best value for money particularly with the standard fittings, build quality and range of available options.

I just sold a current model Subaru XT Forester manual, bought a Tig 147 with Bluetooth and MDI, lovin it so far, very roomy, Quiet and refinned (compared to Subi), slightly down on pure grunt but DSG makes up for that. All lot more solid in build quality. Score out of 10, Subi 6, Tiguan 147, 9.

                              Hi Guys,

Have anyone looked at the Land Rover Freelander 2?

Understand that there is a special on them now, and based on the specs that I want from a Tiguan, it kindda puts it around the same ballpark figure.

Has anyone test driven a Freelander 2? Would love to hear thoughts when comparing the two.

                              Thanks

                              Cheers

The freelander two is better off-road because of greater clearance and more off-road based wheels and tyres BUT it's not even remotely in the same ball-park ON the road. It's not as bad as some of the Asians handling wise, it does at least have decent European suspension but for some reason it just doesn't seem to have any "go". I compared the diesels and the freelander was supposedly more powerful BUT it sure didn't feel or act like it was. If I was doing a LOT of off-road work I'd be into freelander particularly now they've dropped the price to some sort of reality but honestly I don't think it's as good as the Tig overall.
