  • 15,000km service

I paid $280 for my 15,000km service at a VW dealership.
It was the cheapest one i found in Sydney.

Service was great and car was fine but assuming it got done through a VW dealer service that they would/must use genuine VW oil.

On my invoice it shows Valvoline Synpower XL-111 5W-30.

    Is that acceptable?

I am coming up to my 15000 service, rapidly. I will probably go with one of the Belco boys for convenience and the discount offered by salary sacrifice... Will repost cost here

As long as the Valvoline complies with the oil standard as set out by VW. You know what I mean.

          According to this, it does.

            Hmm, yes in Belgium.
I didn't see anything saying approved for VW504.00/507.00 on valvoline.com.au site. But in the 125TSI case it maybe doesn't matter in short term.

It would be worthwhile to contact Valvoline technical help line and ask if the oil is VW approved for 504.00/507.00 ? My understanding from their site and oil label is that it isn't. Otherwise the label and their site would state clearly "approved for VW..."

Do you get a choice of where your car is serviced with salary sacrifice?

Under mine I have two choices, either go to a place which is already setup to use my particular company (which the local dealer is). If I go to one of these places they take my fuel card and just charge it all to the account.

If I choose to go elsewhere I can pay out of my own pocket then put in a claim against my account to be re-imbursed. From what I understand too, any place can apply to the lease company to setup an account allowing them to direct bill the lease company.

Summary: Yes I can choose who I want.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Apparently if a workshop sets up an account with the lease company they have to offer a sizeable discount. I know a mechanic who refused to offer the discount and it got quite ugly

Unless the discount is by way of kick back or "service fee" I wonder how they manage it since my bill showed (what I assume is) the full rate of the service. Seems a little unfair to have the user pay full price so the company can take a cut and the user get nothing out of it, especially when it's all my money anyway. Mind you if it's only couple of % discount given to the lease company for on time payments or something I don't have an issue with it, but if it's "sizeable" that's a whole different story.

Like I said earlier, since I have the option to pay out of pocket and then claim it back I could ensure there is no "cut" in the middle, albeit with a bit of hassle on my side. Would be interesting to find out what the difference is and work a deal with the dealer to share that cut saving us both a few $$.

Mind you it's all speculation, but definately something I would be interested in getting some confirmation on.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

I have a customer who bought Toyota Echo using salary sacrifice scheme and I did a couple of services for him when the car was new, nobody hassled me to agree to a set price all I had to do to give them a call and tell them what and for how much would be done. Than I waited a month for my money, so I told him to go elsewhere. When the lease run out he came back to me with the same car (he sold it to his son), done 110,000km approx. lets say the condition of the engine wasn't that good.
I would suggest, at the end of the lease do not buy the car, get another one.

Small percentage by no means, they were looking for 20-25% discount. Just another way they make money I guess, I must say I'm very sceptical about the salary sacrifice thing but let's not hijack the thread too much hehe.

I will stay mute on the topic, well mostly...so far it has worked out quite well for me, however I feel I have my arms tied, eg. flashing and the consequences of warranty. I will be interested to see the difference between sal/sac 'recommended' service centres and other (personally preferred) centres. I will repost soon. I have to admit that fuel cards are ace for the fiscally irresponsible...
