  • Oil Change procedure??

OK sorry if this is a stupid question. I have done quite alot of mechanical work in the past, so am no noob. I dedided to do an oil change on our TDI yesterday. Bought the oil (Penrite) and filter from VW. The stupid question is where is the filter located? There is a plastic (filter) housing at the left rear of the engine under the turbo piping. It has a large nut on top. Is this it?
Maybe if someone has done a how to this could become a sticky...
    Thanks.
    Dave.

Thankyou, much appreciated. Why not do one of these for each engine type & make them a sticky?

The 1.9 and 2.0l TDI are so similar that it wouldn't make a sense, at least not just for the oil change. Here is the fuel filter how to in the diesel section.

It would be very similar only the oil filter is spin on type. Located at the same side of the engine only at the top, more to the left (driver side).

Just the word of caution here.
I hope that for the safety sake of your family and all road users, you don't plan to do all the servicing yourself. There are many inspection points on the car that need to be checked once a year, and despite it takes only 1-2hours to get the car serviced by professional mechanic - he is trained to see the things you will not see, so you will not pick up certain faults that are not obvious to your eye, ear, touch and other senses.
It is fine when you do one between, tough.

A more recent model photo, 2010 TSI:

Note filter & dipstick location changed a bit as per Transporters post.
When i did mine a couple of months ago (oil & filter), i did it with the oil hot, released the filler cap to alleviate any 'suction' & was surprised to see NO oil lost dribbling down the side of the motor when i unscrewed the filter, as i was expecting it to!
Also as per Transporters post, i only intend to do every other oil change & leave the rest of the servicing to the experts.
              Cheers, Matt

I did my 60,000 K service yesterday and had similar problems locating filters and removing covers etc. All went vey easily and fast in the end, makes you wonder why the dealers charge so much, the most expensive latte in town I reckon. Anyway thanks to the photo in this thread the oil filter was also easy. Thanks Transporter! I also replaced the rear brake pads, and after much frustration I achieved my objective. Only to find the rear brake failure light coming on and staying on. I only wish the failure could've picked the worn pad before the disc damage. Sort of weird it comes on after the repair. Is there an easy fix for the warning light reset?

Hmm, did you replace Haldex oil? It needs to be changed every 30,000km.
What engine, transmission and year is your Tig?

Thanks Transporter! Not yet but I will be within the week. The rear brakes are my first priority though as the fixed part of the calliper is held on by two M14? spline socket heads, hell of a torque, nowhere is a tool available I can find. I need to resolve this as one of the discs is damaged by the rivets and needs replacing/machining and I can't get it off to investigate. Engine is CBAB 2.0 litre diesel, year 06, 6 speed Manual. I have a dislike and distrust of dealer service quality due to past lost and damaged parts to my 99 V6 Man Passat and now the Tig. Now I have done my own service/inspection/repair for $250 vs the dealers $1200+ I don't see the value either.

                        Do you have VCDS?
I don't think that you can replace the rear brake pads without it.

I'm about to do the same on my 103TDI...

The part I'm seeing on the web has the filter with the long plastic feed tube on the top.. The one that the dealer said I needed (which I bought) is a simple cartridge very similar to the petrol cars (GTIs etc) - only slightly smaller.

Which one is right? I presume something must have changed very recently which is why the one supplied doesn't have the tube fitted like most of the how-to's on the forums show?

                            Thanks.

They are the same the p/n is 071 115 562A or Mann HU 719/7 which has flexible tube, the first one is Purflex brand and has solid tube which sometimes get disconnected and stays in oil filter housing. IMO Purflex is a better filter.
