Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    I agree Sharkie
and you can get hd internals for WRX gearbox like MRT unbreakable gear sets or similar (since the Forester gearbox is, I'm almost 100% sure the same).

Almost 100% correct. The Forester has lower 1st to 3rd ratios which make it easier to launch harder. All the ricer boys who do redline/drop clutch starts with one of the grippiest 4wd set-ups do nothing for its reputation. Putting over 220kw atw will put you on a limited life though. I don't abuse mine and at 200,000km it and the original clutch feel as new.

Subaru gearboxes are fine- they are strong and reliable ( I have come from owning 2 WRXs to my Tiguan). There was a design issue with the pre-2001 manual boxes I believe in the casing bolt pattern allowing some flex at high torque and damaging gear teeth but I believe this has been rectified post 2001. The broken subaru gearbox internals you read about on the forums are from people doing 6k clutch dumps on cars putting out 200+Kw at the wheels and this is not a surprise to me in a 4wd car! I have been for a spin in a friends WRX with the MRT dogbox and the amount of abuse that thing got was unbelievable, I am surprised any piece of machinery could tolerate that kind of punishment!!

Probably the main reason I chose the Tiguan was Subaru's continued use of their outdated 4 speed auto box in the Forester, which although fine is not a match for a 7-speed DSG in this day and age. The reliability and little innovations of Subaru has always impressed me.

I used to be a big Sube fan, but sorry I think they have lost it a bit, albeit their sales prove otherwise. I had some bad experiences too with gearboxes in a liberty and Outback, both packing it in before 180k. Sure not exactly low klm, but I'd hope most boxes would last longer than that in normal driving.

Sure the new Forester has the edge on power, but reckon the Stage 1 Tig will still beat it in a straight line at least, stronger Torque and over a wider rev range, while only losing a little on power. But fair's fair, scope to tweak the forester beyond that I am sure.

How about street registered 0-60mph in 3.3 secs? And that from an auto.

              Each to their own!

But FWIW, I'm just Team Beckham as oppose to Team Rooney.

We have a 2003 Forester as well as our Tig, absolutely love it, however you are right about the gearbox. Ours dropped its guts last year.

And together with the rear wheelbeaings failing every 50,000 to 100,000 km on some, these are generally the only faults average Forester owner will encounter.

The gearbox failures are on turbo models only and their auto boxes are reliable (but old).

A friend has a 2009 XT auto and yes they are very old tech and have nasty shifting etc. Not sure when they intend to update the auto tranny? Seems a long time coming...................
