    Not sure if this translates over to the Tiguan DSG box but i was not willing to find out or wait for the updated DSG auto's to find out.

    The fuel economy figures for the DSG diesel sound good though.

    I have read many of these threads , butI have found very few negative posts by any one with first hand experience (I can only recall one on a 2007 box with failed early this year) .Most posts are positive and they are first hand and the vast majority of the negative make references to other sources. me thinks it is like the party circle whisper game ??

    maybe i should do some real stats on the posts + & - analyes no of different posters , and the no of first handed posts

      There are more internet threads questioning whether there are DSG problems than threads about DSG problems. Most of those about DSG problems are related to personal dislikes or the peculiarities of DSG, not faults.

      How many genuine cases of people having to pay out of their own pocket for a new DSG transmission.? An exceedingly small number. I have found two. Remember auto boxes fail out of warranty sometimes too.

      Also consider that there have been well over 1 million made and some are now 7-8yrs old where transmission failure is on the cards for any car.

        I talked my previous boss into a new 2009 MY10 Golf TSI DSG which he took delivery of in early December last year. The thing has been nothing but trouble and in 9 months he has had both a DSG failure, (whole DSG box replaced not just mechatronics) and a total engine failure, (whole engine replaced) with in addition an aircon system failure.

        So by no means is German engineering beyond approach or failure proof. They can get it wrong. Yes, the % is small in the big scheme of things, but if it was you, how would you feel ? ..... I cop regular abuse for talking him into a dud car and a dud brand ....

        The DSG (550NM rated) of the Tiguan and the T5.2 Vans are in fact almost identical to the Q5's. It merely took this long to get to the market as they had to do the work to make it fit transverse instead of longitidunal as in the Q5. I have not heard bad things about the 550NM DSG box yet, so I'm hoping it will be better than the previous (and current 250NM 7spd Golf) DSG boxes .... after all I have 1 on order in a new Multivan..... I'm still taking a 6yr warranty though, just to be sure ....

          Issues?
          Hesitation from dead stopped has not been eliminated. It still won't engage the clutch until there are enough revs to give take-off power and I don't think that has been fully optimised.

          Off-road with a DSG?? Now that's a lot of fun and quite an adventure. As with a Tig, there is no low range on the Q, and with a DSG there is no torque converter. So, if you are trying to walk it up a very steep uneven slope very slowly, you get hesitation, lots of clutch-slip as the revs build up (you might even roll backwards if you don't have the hill-holder ON), and then maybe at around 2000RPM+ she says "off we go"... drops the clutch and launches you onwards and upwards at a great rate of knots!! Needs practice and a different set of skills, but I am getting there.

          Sharkie, IF you're correct and the new 7 speed DSG in the Tig IS the same as the Q5 then the "problems" that I've been concerned about all along (off-road and towing problems due to an inability to "slip the clutch") still exist according to "Moonan". Takes the Tig from being an adequate off-road machine and great tow vehicle into being a quick tall hatchback.

          Cheers

            Agreed, the DSG WILL be worse for off-road use than the Tiptronic ..... its a fact I believe VW considered and based on how many Tigs really go far off the beaten track its a risk they're probably willing to take .... so if you want to go off-road in a Tig .... buy a manual .... .... it would be quicker onroad as well as a bonus ....

            Now, again, as I previously stated, all we need is a 147TSI Manual .... .... with low range for the die-hard offroaders and taller 1st & 2nd gear for the petrolheads ....

              ....and maybe it will make the Tig even better in what it is.

                In all seriousness the off-road model should be diesel, much better for the purpose. Manual would do the job I guess BUT at the moment we can't buy a manual in NZ AND I suspect that the advent of the DSG will see the eventual demise of the manual as well ??

                Incidentally, for most weekend off-roaders an auto is MUCH preferred as you can't stall it !!!

                  Comparing the German 7 speed DSG details with the current 6 speed model for the 125Kw I am seeing a pretty significant improvement on acceleration and fuel use. Does this seem right?

                  0-100 9.2 8.1 -> 1.1 sec faster

                  L/100c 9.9 8.6 -> 1.3 ltr per 100 less
                  L/100u 13.5 11.8

                    Improved fuel economy is good news especially for TSI engine where in city traffic the fuel consumption suffers the most, 1.7L/100 improvement is great.
