My2011 103tdi 7speed dsg

Hello as promised a report on the 103TDI 7Speed DSG .. So in one sentence Holly S**T. It Feels and Shifts very Quickly.. Now Patricks auto care put on the compliance plates and so forth when the cars arrive in OZ . They also fit the Fuel Guide labels... Now if they have fitted the right label to the Car the combined City country drive is now 6.6litres per hundred... that is Awesome.compared to the previous 7.8 in the auto.. Controls on wheel have changed and a 4 motion badge is fitted on the rear tailgate..

I have my first 125 to arrive in a couple of days.. can't wait..

The chipped 125 and 147/s should handle the DSG fine.
First gear is a bit short when chipped so it will allow for smoother get away (if the mechatronic unit works)

I have hear nothing but good about the DSG and I'm glad I'm getting the DSG on my car.
Or is it just the graps are always sourer over the fence ?

Haha, by goes I meant accelerates, I don't doubt the longevity of the gearbox. I assume it would be a bit quicker than the torque converter auto.

I know, i just meant the DSG should be able to handle the change from first to second better with the APr upgrade as it comes up so quickly


And by no means are the grapes sourer over the other side of the fence guys.
I am just saying that there are far too many threads on the forum about DSG failings and Mechatronic units requiring replacement that i wouldn't option one.
Sure there may be a few people who haven't had it done but i wasn't willing to risk my almost 40k vehicle being taken away for a few weeks and costing me a fortune to get these things fixed when a manual will do it's job properly and have had no issues so far.

There are many well documented issues with the DSG gearboxes ..... the mechatronics units fail on many boxes .... % it probably quite small (less then 5% of all DSG delivered boxes), yet still a concern for many.

Unless the DSG in the Tiguan has launch control, it will still be slower in real life than a manual. The initial hesitation common to all DSG boxes means the manual Tig will be off the line and on its way before the DSG Tig even starts moving.

Yes, the DSG shifts very quickly (much quicker than a manual) but the hesitation is what kills it ....

With regard to DSG reliability. My searches have not found a thread with post after about mid 2008.. I suspect the problems with the Mechatronics unit may? have been resolved with MY09 boxes. Comments and flames accepted

Not sure how you were searching, there have been multiple threads over the last few months in the passat and golf/jetta forums about the issues with the DSG box.
Not sure if this translates over to the Tiguan DSG box but i was not willing to find out or wait for the updated DSG auto's to find out.


The fuel economy figures for the DSG diesel sound good though.

It should be the same DSG as is in new T5.2, so expect it to be a bit stronger and more reliable. It can transmit more torque.

I have a 125 TDI with 7sp s-tronic in my Q5. s-tronic is the Audi name for DSG. It is DP-chipped and goes very nicely! A different configuration in some ways (longditudinal engine and transmission and quattro 60/40 constant 4x4 instead of front-drive / haldex) but more similarities than differences. Note that the Q5 release has seen DSG in 3l V6 TDI so the old power / torque limits are not such an issue any more.

Issues?
Hesitation from dead stopped has not been eliminated. It still won't engage the clutch until there are enough revs to give take-off power and I don't think that has been fully optimised. Much better than earlier DSGs but still there. As has been said a manual responding to an intelligent person who begins to lift his left foot as his brain tells the right foot when to go down will beat a computer that can only respond to throttle request.

Off-road with a DSG?? Now that's a lot of fun and quite an adventure. As with a Tig, there is no low range on the Q, and with a DSG there is no torque converter. So, if you are trying to walk it up a very steep uneven slope very slowly, you get hesitation, lots of clutch-slip as the revs build up (you might even roll backwards if you don't have the hill-holder ON), and then maybe at around 2000RPM+ she says "off we go"... drops the clutch and launches you onwards and upwards at a great rate of knots!! Needs practice and a different set of skills, but I am getting there.

As for reliability, only new still, one year and 30,000km - and no sign of any issues - a great engine / transmission combination

I don't think (I'm not positive though) that the new 7 speed DSG being put in the Tiguan is the same unit as in the Q5. According to all that I've read it was developed, or at least released, AFTER the Q5 launch (over a year after in fact). I do hope that the new Tig box has overcome the off-road issues, otherwise it will be the death knell (imo) to all those who want to use it off-road to any degree. It will also effect towing, particularly from a standing start. I've said it before but IF they haven't fixed these issues I can't understand the logic in this move to DSG, the new Touareg had a specifically developed Tiptronic box (8 speed), at least in part because of these issues.

Here's hoping the new one is better that than Q5 !!

Perhaps the OP would be good enough to test the new DSG Tig on some of these issues for us and let us know what they find ??

Let's just have a faith in the German engineering that they know what they're doing. I'm sure they've tested DSG in off road conditions.
