  • APR - General Thread

    Hi,

Despite that there is so much information available, I really would like a thread with as much information available about APR upgrades. I have read a lot of threads in the Tiguan area, team_v's tig, among others, is a really good start, however I want as much information as possible regarding APR, condensed in the one spot. (BTW team_v, nice work)

    Things like:

    Warranty
    Wear and tear
    Fuel consumption
Drive train (coping with the increase in power)
Where to get it done across Australia
    Prices

    ...are all really important.

I realise this is probably a slightly selfish exercise, however I am very interested about the phenomenal, potential power on tap. I would just like to make the right decision.

On another note, I love the forum (my wife now hates it!!!) - where do I get the vwwatercooled window stickers from?

    Thanks

    Jum

This is the place to start .... APR - High Performance Development for Audi, VW and Porsche Vehicles. ... and here ... http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f97/...rts-23068.html

Warranty .... if the tuning can be traced to any failed component by VW the warranty will be nullified.
Wear and Tear .... I know of APR cars with many more than 100 000km on them with hard use with no issues. All power modifications will to some extent increase wear and tear.
Fuel Consumption .... driven as usual about 10% improvement, driven to use all the extra power 4-5l/100km more than usual
Drive Train .... the drivetrain has no issues with the increased power. Over time an upgraded clutch may be the way to go, but all components certainly well up to it. I've done 7000km with the chip with no issues .... clip is approaching 50000km with it with no issues.
Where to get and prices .... see APR's website

In addition to your questions some performance points to ponder (chipped only TSI manual) ...
      0-100km/h drops from 8.2s to 6.5s
      400m drops from 15.7s to 14.5s
80-120km/h drops from 5.2s to 3.5s (which decreases your exposure to oncoming traffic by a huge margin)

Its worthwhile ... do it ... turns to Tig from a quickish SUV into a real performance contender ....

Let me just say that Mazda 6 MPSs, R36s, R32s, Tuned VW GTIs, most WRx's and most V8s are no problem any more .... and the only SUVs out there that is quicker are the ML63AMG and X5M ....

After having my Stage 2 Tiguan for almost 2 weeks i can say that i am more than happy with the modifications.

The stock airbox has limitations for power due to the open back that allows warm air from teh engine bay to flow into the intake.
The Carbonio is closed off at the rear and only allows cool air to flow into the intake from the front of the car, acting as a true Ram style intake.

The stock downpipe is quite restrictive, getting under the car will allow you to see that, i have some shots in my thread too of the system out of the car.
The new pipe has a fair bit more volume so the air can move through faster and provide more power.

The stage 2 tune apparently spools the turbo up earlier which means the power is now on tap from around 1000-1200RPM and surges all the way up to the red.
As the power is available earlier, the revs seem to stay up more during gear changes which makes them smoother.
Traction is no problem at all as the 4Mo system transfers the power to the road easily, i have only had it slip once during wet weather at the traffic lights and that was probably due to oil on teh road from other cars (the slip only lasted about half a second and then it shot off).

The engine mount seems to have made gear changes a bit smoother too, at first mine were a bit rough but it could have been getting used to the 6MT box.

Fuel economy is great when driven economically.
          Ranges between the 7-8l/100km mark.
When giving it a bootfull through the mountain runs, it will jump to 10-12l/1000km

Haven't had any issues with the upgrades so far and no warranty issues either.

Thanks all, appreciate the responses. I have been looking at the APR site for a while now and I thought it would be important to get the information from the horse's mouth, so to speak. I don't know how I didn't notice it but the APR dealers are here

Actually some more info .... (chipped TSI comparisons)

BMW has the X5 4.4 V8 TT that is quicker and the X5 M, both stock standard and in the 5s 0-100km/h bracket. The X5 3.0 TTs are almost there at around 6.8s .... These are all $100 000+ SUVs though BMW's upcoming new X3 with the 3.0 TT will be a flier ....

              Mercedes ML only has 1 the mighty ML63 AMG at 5.0s, the ML500 can't crack 7s for some reason. ML63 = $200K+ ......

Audi only has the mighty V12 6.0 TTDI but at $254K. RR Sport is there at 6.1s...

So a very exclusive world a chipped TSI lives in ....

              In comparison, in stock form the TSI (8.2s) is easily beaten by a number of cheaper small SUVs .... RAV4 V6 (7.2s), Forrester XT (7.1s), Q5 TSI (7.2s), Q5 FSI (6.9s), Q5 3.0TDI (6.9s) etc ....

and then there's the Porsche Cayenne ('09):
                Cayenne - 8.5secs - 0-100km/h
                Cayenne Diesel - 8.3secs
                Cayenne S - 6.8secs
                Cayenne GTS - 6.1secs
                Cayenne Turbo - 5.1secs
                Cayenne Turbo S - 4.8secs...

It was a Cayenne S that I pulled away from down the freeway the other day...

Ok, next question. Someone contacted me regarding getting an Oettinger reflash done for a TDI with good results. Has anyone had this done for a TSI?

These are the claimed stats from their site:

                  max. power:
                  177 kW (240 bhp) @ 5800 rpm
                  max. torque:
                  239 lb ft (325 Nm) @ 2300 - 4800 rpm
                  0 - 100 km/h:
                  approx. 7,7 sec
                  max. speed:
                  approx. 220 km/h (137 mph)

Also, they have some seriously hot wheels (if I didn't have the New Yorks already I would be considering the black ones...)

I have also stumbled across Superchip. Further opinions?

Hope someone from APR monitors this thread...or someone can answer:

Wondering with the Carbonio intake system for the 2.0TSI it lists the intake @ $599, but then you also have the stage 2 intake pipe ontop of that for $349. Wondering what the difference is over the OEM in the car, is it larger or more direct airflow?

Considering going from stage 1 to stage 2 setup for a MY10 Tiguan.

You only need the Intake and a mounting bracket.

The stage 2 pipe doesn't really provide any additional benefit from what i have heard.

The "Stage 2" part does not give as much gains as the "stage 1" piece, it was designed to compliment it in looks - the Carbon Fibre has better thermal properties, so there is function in the form!

Yes, I saw and posted in another thread (Downpipe/Exhaust 2.0 TSi).

Question the site says it's 3" and there has been plenty of discussion around the 4Mo getting in the way of a straight 3" downpipe, yet to me that looks to be without split? correct?

How much room does that leave? Any rubbing? No photo's perchance on a tiguan?

Sharkie, yes, but cheaper? All those are more expensive than a stock Tig (unless you get into the options!) Compared with an ordinary RaV4, Forester etc, the stock TSI is the quickest - and by far the better engine.
