Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Anyone consider a brake upgrade?

I was wondering if anyone has considered a brake upgrade for their Tig? Either pads or new rotors and calipers? I would appreciate if anyone has done it if they could share their experiences. I think the standard brakes are pretty good but at times I wish they had a bit more grab and let's face it, they don't really look the part especially if you have bigger rims on the car...

Mine grab like nothing else, almost put myself through the windscreen if i hit them too hard.

I was considering a brake upgradfe initially but now i will wait until the rotors are worn down before i go that path.
I would be getting some EBC pads when they wear down but don't know if that increases bite, it may just reduce brake dust.

ECStuning has brake kits which may be of some help but i don't know how much bigger you can go really.

Remember that the Tiguan already has the GTI brakes (312mm). So upsizing the rotors or calipers is really not necessary for the environment a Tig lives in.

      I'm planning the following ....

EBC Red pads (no fade under even track use)
Cross-drilled rotors (still 312mm so purely for looks through the alloy wheels)
Current: 2023 MY23 T-Roc R Lapiz Blue + Beats Audio + Black pack 2018 MY19 Golf R manual Lapiz Blue + DAP) 2018 MY18 Golf 110TSI (150TSI) Trendline manual White2014 Amarok TSI Red (tuned over 200kw + lots of extras) 2013 Up! manual Red 2017 Polo GTI manual Black Previous VWs and some others ...

I was considering the corss-drilled rotors for when mine wear down but i have heard that the holes get clogged up with brake dust quite easilyy so if i do upgrade i will probably opnly do slotted rotors.

EBC Red pads are on my list when the pads need replacement.
I believe a VWWatercooled site sponsor sells them.

I found my brakes really grabbed when the car was new but after 6000+K's they fade a bit on hard driving... maybe I will just look at some EBC red pads...

Where ever I could, I always used slotted rotors on our cars, so I will try to get slotted for Tig as soon as it arrives. Current car Forester got slotted rotors when my kids started to drive. The braking characteristic with slotted discs is always the same and the brakes don't fade. Another cheaper brake upgrade would be braided brake hoses, just make sure that your car is street legal and your insurer is OK with that mod.

              Sharkie,

By any chance you know if they Tiggy and the GTi share the same caliper? I would love to get a hand on a 4 piston caliper BBK

Well if somebody has some interest on this the front piston caliper diameter on the AWD Tiggy is 57mm and the GTi is 54mm so the BBK for the GTi don't work perfectly well.

I'm in the middle of convincing a BBK manufacturer to make on for my wife's tiggy.

Would anybody be insterested on a BBK? Drop me a PM please

No, not unless i was going to track it -which although I'd love to see some faces out there, I wouldn't. so maybe something like this if the looks are a concern:
                  Big Brake Caliper Cover Kit.

                  much cheaper

I am considering a brake upgrade on 2011 Tiguan 147tsi, APR stage 1. Recently i had the need to pull up in a bit of hurry from a fairly high speed the result was over heated brakes and warped rotors. I would hate to thing what a lap of Mt Panorama would do to them.
If you tend to drive a bit harder than most then Brembo have an upgrade but you need at east 18 inch rims i think which makes for an expensive mod. If anyone has done other upgrades that are considerably better than originals and cheaper than Brembo option i would love to here about it.

Yes I do but it would not be a near future upgrade for me. Still I like to consider options available for Tigs. one options I have in mind was AUDI TTRS brakes. I think they are made by brambo and some times second hand kits come out in eBay as owner upgraded their brakes. Only problem see with this option is you need to at least have 19 inch wheels to clear callipers.

depending on the budget, i would start with replacing front rotors with slotted discs, high temp brake fluid (i use motul rbf600), remove the dust shields and use good pads with high MOT.

i have used ebc redstuff and the pads crumbled after a day on Marulan track with stock calipers and the red paint turned black!

i have used hawk hps and did not find them suitable for my needs and experienced brake fade (i should have known as these pads are not suitable for track use at all).

good info here for pads selection:

                        Zeckhausen Racing

i have been using stoptech street performance pads (with MOT of 1300 degrees F) and have not had any fade on track sessions over the last 2 years (big contributing factor is front 330mm Stoptech BBK).

imo, BBK gives the biggest benefit no fade in repetitive hard braking.

with my Tiguan, 1/2 hour on Lakeside enthusiastic cruise aka Happy Laps did show some brake fade but a few laps of cooling runs the brakes went back ok.

Good option is the scirocco front brakes. 345mm discs. That's more than likely what I'm doing if the vwr bbk doesn't fit behind my wheels.

345 is quite big, you are going to have to run a minimum 18" wheel to fit those suckers aren't you?
That is my main reason for not going with a BBK and instead going for upgraded brake fluid and if i want more i can get braided lines.

I'd assume so. I know some 17's will just fit over the golf r brakes and these are larger.

                              I'll be running a 19
