The genuine ( Best Bars ) bar fitted by My dealer to my Tiggy ( as far as i know the bar recommended by VW Aus.) is nothing like the hitch shown by Astra,. Is a full bar which requires removal of the lower rear panel from the vehicle during fitting and is attached to the chassis on both sides. the only thing I don't like is vertical "tongue" . I have to use the jack to compress the anti rattle Foam to fit the ball hitch.

      Do Tow Balls Break?

      Hi All,

This link to a local forum that has thrashed through the above issue, may entertain you: Do tow balls break ? - SA 4x4 Community Forum - The only forum for the offroad and 4x4 enthusiast.

The aim was to try to seperate urban legend from an actual case where this has happened.

Most of it is in English, although there are some Afrikaans words and idiomatic use and cultural references which you may not understand.

But pretty comprehensive, from "shooting from the hip" to mathematics.

So please correct me if I am wrong... if I have a genuine VW towbar, the only extra "smarts" I get is a slight remapping that tells the car there is more weight on the back and splits it approx 30/70. There is no alteration to anything else?
For the sort of towing that I will be doing, I can live without the remapping.
Regardless of trailer type or setup, if the trailer has electric brakes, you will still need a brake controller anyway.
If I'm taking the box trailer to the tip, it won't matter at all.
        Cheers.
Apart from the remapping option, if you have a 147 TSI with the rear optical parking sensors it also tells the system to switch off the sensors when a trailor is fitted to stop the constant alarming and visual display warning when the car is in reverse gear. Cheers Paul

Does anyone have a photo of their Tig with a tow bar on (I would love a shot of the H/R one but I guess VW will do)?
          Thanks

              Hi Guys,

The factory trailer module does a number of things.

              1. Informs the ABS/ESP of a trailer connected to the vehicle.
              2. Disconnects the rear park sensors when the trailer is connected
              3. Enables bulb monitoring of the globes on the trailer
              4. Integrates the trailer into the alarm system (If fitted)
              5. If the vehicle is fitted with the optical park display it will show an image of a trailer connected to the back of the vehicle instead of the park sensors

              Cheers,
              Boris

                NZtiguan,

I have a dealer fitted tow bar similar to yours but it has an additional bolt and nut at the top to stop it from rattling (according to dealer's technician), so I cannot remove it as easily as your.

                Regards,

I have the bolt as well !!! It's just held in position with a lock nut and so you can adjust it yourself so it doesn't "hold" so tight (I did !!). It means it may wobble fractionally more but it's not really noticeable and then you CAN get it on and off.

                  Cheers

I have the same towbar with the anti-rattle bolt. You need to get under there and back it off as Derek said so you can get the bar on and off. Mine was so tight originally that jumping up and down on the bar wouldn't move it with the hitch pin out.

Thanks NZTiguan and Tanehy. I think I will just leave it in place. Actually I bought a hitch pin lock for $19 on ebay to ensure no one pinch my towbar .

If VW rate the impact bar as strong enough, why do HR question that? Also, fitting the OEM one will cause less cosmetic damage than the HR one which I have to admit to finding desirable.
Curiosity got the better of me today and I cut out the plastic bit on the underside of the bumper where the factory tow hitch would go. It answered my previous question on why Hayman Reece supply the whole rear mounting assembly - it's because our Aus models do not have the pre-drilled impact bar to simply hold on a hitch receiver. So there you go - no shortcuts available here.

Has anyone managed to get the Hayman Reece one installed yet? If so, any pics?

                            Hi guys.

So is there still no-one out there that has put a non-VW tow hitch on their Tig's in Aus? I really would prefer not to be the first

Arctra, did you end up having a towbar installed?
I've had a quote of $910 for a trailboss, they'e getting it in for me.
But I want to have a good look before going ahead, to see how it compares to genuine.
according to specs is good for 2000kg, not that I will ever tow much more than a trailer.
they didn't have a brochure, and there is nothing I can find on the net.
                              cheers
