Na mate, I didn't get it installed mate. I just cannot justify the cost at the moment. Good to know there is a third option on the market now though - before it was just OEM or HR.

As you can see its the wiring thats the problem, not the tow bar itself.
WOW. Thanks for those figures. I asked my dealer how much it would cost to install just the tow hitch WITHOUT the wire harness and was still quoted $1200. If only you were a Sydney dealer I would get just the hitch installed with you. *sigh*

As correct as Derek is about the safety provided by the proper OEM wiring harness, I don't care for it. I would be happy to go for the cheaper relay based harnesses from the UK as I will only ever be using it for a bike carrier. On selling I would fully disclose that it's not OEM.

I imagine the 3.5 hours fitting shown incur an additional labour cost to the ?875.50 quoted? What do mechanics charge per hour these days? I have a feeling the guys that work on my Buell charge $100 an hour...

Dermot, local sales guy says it's 100 minutes for bar & 250 minutes for wiring kit, making it a total of just under 6 hours...

        can you confirm this?

Hi, does anyone know if you can get a higher tow hitch that will fit into the VW original vertical tow mount. Just I have a tandem trailer loaded with kayaks which the tig tows a lot & it has slipper springs. Have to push the front of the trailer down to hicth it on which is not good, gives negative drawbar Wt. VW only have the one hitch in their system . All my trailers are quite high - even if I had to tow the camper trl it would end up nose down.
          thanks

Got a call from Tyrepower today to say the towbar kit has arrived...
will go and have a look and take some pictures, anybody have any ideas what particularly to look out for?
            cheers

              Parking sensors when towing

anyone here tow with the parking sensors. I thought pluggin in a trailer was supposed to modify the sensors so they didn't signal the alarm of somethign close but that doesn't seem to be working with ours. Sorry I haven't looked at the manual yet

I had VW bar installed at delivery (part of haggling) as I needed to tow boat & box trailer - often towed on gravel roads so needed benefit of stability control. It also picked up some faults in wiring on both trailers !
I have only removed the hitch once - it is not easy compressing the vertical tongue against the anti-rattle foam & installing the retaining pin. At the time I replaced the standard pin with a straight lockable pin - it gave better security but also gave better access to the safety chain connection points.
Recently hired a trailer as needed longer tray - young bloke at servo was going to connect safety chain to cut-out underneath towbar, rather than to correct anchor points - trap to watch out for.
Have been really pleased with TDI auto for towing - mainly used towing boat Boat weighs around 600kg - with just under 60kg on towbar (measured)

Recently had trip to west coast tassie - 580km with boat attached. Got 8.1l/100 over (probably extra 60kg fuel) and 7.7 on return - was pleased given steep & winding sections involved

Pretty good figures there Tastig! Don't tell the grey nomads or we'll have an influx of TDI's towing massive caravans out there...

If you have the correct VW system it certainly should turn off the rear sensors, mine does. If, on the other hand you have one of the cobbled together after market systems that simply bypasses all the good stuff that the Tig provides ? then I have no idea what happens or how it works.

The 13-pin connector for the genuine towbar wiring kit has a micro switch and wiring built in, so that when the dust flap is open while the 7-pin flat adaptor harness is fitted, it disables the rear park assist, where factory-fitted.

I wonder if this Hayman Reese towbar is ADR compliant. It certainly isn't on the new Mitsubishi Challenger.

George II, I doubt it, as the ball has to be within a range of a certain height from the ground, and distance from the rear axle line. Hence why the H/R towbar for the new Challenger isn't ADR comliant.

Derek, no cobbled together job, it was installed by dealer pre pick up. So assuming you dont do anything other than connect it together, maybe there is a fault in mine. I dont think there is anything to setup thru to MFD, but maybe a vagcom related change that hasn't been done or from Una mais post, maybe its a switch that isn't working. Oh well, bit of a pain, orig dealer is in Vic and I have little confidence in the local dealer, so I may have to check out a bit further myself. Any suggestions welcome!

OK, well I suspect it's a coding issue then, so you'll either need a dealer or somebody with VCDS to code it the correct way (well I "suspect" that's the issue anyway ?? guess it could be something else ??)

                          Cheers

Interesting - I also had mine fitted at the dealer prior to delivery (147 TSI) and have exactly the same problem + what's with the anti-rattle foam as described by Tastig as I have none and it drives me bl**dy nuts, everytime I go over a bump it sounds like the rear end is going to fall out + if I am cruising around 80ks (approx 1600rpm in D7) and accelerate it sounds terrible + has done this since new - not particularly happy I can tell you as it can be heard over the CD/Radio - got a feeling mine was in a hurry to get out the door.

in addition to the foam, my bar has a threaded bolt above the retaining pin - I had to adjust this & tighten the locking nut to take the rattle out

after mine was first installed, it showed fault light & dealer had to reprogram the system

thanks Steve for that...stuck my head under the bumper and low and behold there was the retaining bolt about to fall out...it's been like that since new (3 months old) - have now secured the bolt and locked the nut ...so I guess they probably forgot to tighten it up...don't have any foam tho?
