BMW X1 review and compared to Tiguan

I take some comfort from it Sharkie, since I was also looking at the X1 but never made it to the dealer. Was looking at BMW1 for my daughter when we were buying Golf and I didn't like it.

I went down to my local BMW dealer this morning and had a good look at the X1 .....

Looks wise the Tig is overall better ..... X1 has a Lancer Hatch rear look going which looks rubbish ... front is slightly better than the Tig ....

Interior wise, the Tig looks & feels more expensive ... the plastics in the X1 is quite ordinary IMO. The leather looks plasticky .....

Engine wise, its a draw ... no TSI equivalent in the X1, but their diesels are both better than the TDIs.....
especially the 2.0 TT ....

Pricewise the Tig has it won as well .... X1 starts at $58K on the road (in QLD) and has far less features and feels cheaper than any Tig .....

The reviewer of that article must have been bribed by BMW as the Tig wins overall by an easy margin IMO .... (and I normally like BMWs more than VWs)

Couldn't agree with that comparison summary more. The X1 looks more like a wagon (Grandis/Odyssey style) compared to the compact SUV it's supposed to be. Along with the "leather" feeling like vinyl, it really doesn't have the competitive edge BMW would've liked over the Tiguan. I'm curious to see a CarAdvice shootout between the X1, Tiguan and other similar models all with similar features.

Bet you any money they'll rate it higher than the Tig. They wouldn't be game to do otherwise.

BMW have THE best marketing crew of any car manufacturer. For example, you've only got to look at any weekly newspaper (at least in QLD) and there will be at least one "review" of a BMW EVERY week. You'd be forgiven for thinking that BMW have a new model out every week. And if it's not one of their cars, it'll be one of their bikes, but either way there will be at least one review/editorial (aka advertisment) for a beemer every week.

i took a x1 for a drive the other day- the 123d. not a bad car, behaved nicely on the road and went well too. dad's looking at one- they certainly look more like a ''sports suv'' than anything i've seen in a while. much more low slung than what i recall of driving the tiggy or the land rover freelander.

but isnt it just a 2.0L ? and isnt it bi-turbo instead of twin turbo?

not a bad car, but would tuning compromise the car in any way over the long term, what with the fact that one small turbo is feeding a larger one and needs everything to be perfect perfect perfect? i dont know......

not a bad car at all, but it's exxy for a car with such little room in the back. it's an suv and yet it felt less roomy sitting in the back than my 2008 vw polo. no exaggeration- in my polo, i can slouch in the back and my knees will be touching the seat in front. in the x1, i had to step in sideways (not enough room for me to step in toe-heel pointing to the nose of the car just like i would in the polo) and i had to sit straight up with my knees spread lest they dig into the seat in front.

would have liked to consider the 123 d somewhere down the track too, but they're so small inside. better pricing and better utilization of space with vw's.
