Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Nice Run KR,

Actually I think you now hold the world record for a 125kw base Tig down the quarter mile.

Excellent & the Gauntlet is down for the Tig drag race challenge

Not sure what it is with the local R36s .... nobody in Oz that I can remember has posted a better time than a 14.4 .... and Wheels Magazine's April 2010 test resulted in a 15.3 ....

No stock GTI (Mk5 or 6 ) has posted a better time than 14.6 (Mk6) .... and as KR said, the best of the chipped ones (DSG with launch control) I've seen was a 13.8

R32s are doing 14.5s in DSG with higher trap speeds but slower 60ft times.

The size and weight of the Tig counts against it a bit .... this only really shows up at the strip as on the street where you typically don't get to run to 160km/h, the Tigs quick off the mark pace actually has it beating most other cars out there ....

yes well done KR and those times also show just how good a base 125 is. The extra torque and torque spread over its SUV counterparts make the 125 a much punchier engine than its power figures (125kw) would suggest

yes the R20 is a golf, a replacement for the R32

Interesting. Thats a pretty big discrepancy. Maybe there is something in the launch control?

Sorry I should have been more clear. I was talking chipped tiggy vs chipped GTI.

Everyone knows that R32s are slower than their turbo charged brethren given a few tweeks

I reckon I can rule out 4motion as a reason for the low trap speed...

@ Half track, compared to most R32's the Tig is ~2mph down
@ Full track, they are 6mph down!! Huge losses in latter half

Conclusion: it has to be a combination of shear dimensional size/stance and a slight headwind

How can we make the Tig more aero!?
Fold wing mirrors in is a start.......

I think looking at the 60ft times, you'd find the Tigs ahead, with the weight and size then counting against them over the rest of the run ....

Mmmm, maybe a CF bonnet etc to fix that weight problem .....

                "Carbon Fibre, the final frontier..."

how bout a good wax job before the 1/4mile run!? cheaper too..

lowered would help aero, and perhaps a front splitter - less turbulence

have we taken it too far now!? where do you draw the line.......

Probably out of the question to strip the inside of the car - the seats do weigh a fair chunk though

hmm, weight is the killer for the Tig. Carbon fibre rear hatch would help - that weighs a tonne. Or maybe just strip out the frontwheel drive?

Some times from other events in Oz ....

Polo GTI with quite a few mods including suspension, tyres, ECU, DP & FMIC = 14.30

                        08 Golf GTI DSG APR - 14.29

so KRracing's Tiguan with only an ECU doing pretty good at 14.5 ....

                        and

147TSI APR auto in the USA did a 14.8

                          Nice times!

I think that taking off +1 second on a quarter mile is a massive achievement for not modifying the car mechanically.
