  • TSI Fuel Consumption

    Hi all,

I recall reading something about this earlier but I couldn't find it on the posts.

In any event, I picked up my 147 Tig a couple of weeks ago (fully optioned) and love it. My last car was a 2007 BMW so it had quite a bit to live up to and I actually originally ordered a Q5 but was impressed with the Tig and haven't looked back.

Okay now to the point I want to discuss. I have only filled my car twice since I've had it and it's only done 842Km. So on average the car is doing 421km to the tank. That seems REALLY inefficient to me.

So my question is what are other's getting on their 147 TSI's? And for those who have the APR upgrade (which I'll be getting shortly) what numbers are you guys getting? I'm only interested in City numbers.

On a side note, I noticed that my car has Daytime Running Lights. Is there a way to change the current lights to LED lights AND to have them always on while the car light switch is in "auto"? If so, has anyone done this (or planning to) and do you know the cost?

My only grip with VW so far (as it's my first) is the Owner's Manual. It's not very well drafted so thank god for vwwatercooled.org.au!

Give the Tiguan 2000-10,000 km to give a true economy figure. It is "tight".

The Tiguan does not have DRLs, but leaves the parkers on if set to AUTO headlamps, is unlocked by the remote keyfob , in the daylight, or something similar. Ad leaves them on if the ignition is off, but the key not withdrawn. Is this what you mean?

yes give at least 2000klm, and it may conmtinue to improve up to about 5000. I was quite disappointed with our hwy fuel economy when we first picked up hours, now on long trips we get 800-900 to the tank.

The 147 is an auto, so that costs you about a 1 l/100 there. Beyond that will depend a lot on how you drive. See the Fuel economy thread for more info, ideas and experieince of others there.

We have a chipped manual and I averaged 7.9 (measured by refilling, not from the MFD) in a recent trip in Sydney - that was half city, half open hwy driving. I worked out from that that my city only consumption was about 9l per 100. In my experieince you can get the combined fig for the car in city driving if driven with some economy in mind. So for you thats about 10.1 l/100 or about 550-600 per tank before filling up again.

however it does depend a lot on how you drive and I generally seem to be getting lower than others. Again see the web and/or the fuel economy thread for tips on improving economy.

Great to hear you are enjoying it. They are a great car.

depends what you mean by 'city' numbers. If that's stuck in sydney peak hour traffic twice a day, 5 days a week, then that's probably pretty good.

Worst I've got is 10.2 and that was in Sydney over a week traveling around northern beaches (French's Forest, Dee Why, Manly, Narrabeen etc). Some of that was in peak hour time - although there doessn't seem to be a lot of difference anymore - seems it's always slow and choked!

Mine is a manual though, but it is remapped. I haven't notice it get any better with higher k's, in fact it's got worse - gone from 7.9 to 8.1 (must be taking lessons from sharkie )

My first 1000kms was a little scary, but even on 1900kms it is noticeably better. Still, the Tiggy is a 1600kg car with AWD and turbo motor, so is never going to be super economica.

I just drove from Far NOrth Qld to Gold Coast, reasonable load in the car, and got average 8.3l/100 (MFD), which I'm pretty happy with for an auto. Average speed over 1850k was just over 90k/h.

getting the remap done while I'm done here, will be interesting to see what happens on the way home ;-]

That's what i was thinking, especially since it's 99.8% highway driving.

Happy to meet up on Saturday on the Sunshine Coast or Brissy as well, Tigga1.

Going on a bike run on Sunday ending up at the Motorcycle Expo on the Gold Coast so thats out from a VW perspective ....

Let us know when you plan to go to APR to have the chip done, as I may come by as well. Ive had enough of the weather in Brisbane, so will have the Tig with me at work for a few days and the CBD is close to APR....

ah, forgot that was on this sunday. Although I stopped going to them 2 years ago. I was buying a new bike nearly after every one- 5 in 6 years was just getting rediculous!

                          cept mine's auto...

as you can imagine, fuel consumption has gone skywards for the short term just feels SO good!

although aftermarket stereo (amp, sub and splits) is pretty good too!

let me know if you're down this way at all...would love to check out wheels, springs and manual Tigs!

Ended up going to the Expo in the Tig at the last minute due to threatening wheather and got 8.2l/100km (220km with air going flat out all the way & back) averaged including some enthusastic driving through the cities at both ends.I believe the sticky tyres I've got on adds at least 1l/100km as on the std tyres on a trip to the Sunshine Coast once I got to 6.7l/100km.For long trips in the future I will switch to the stock tyres to 1.) get some use out of them, 2.) save my sticky tyres for a better purpose than mindlessly cruising and 3.) get better fuel economy.
