  • First Sydney/NSW Tiguan get together (21 Feb)

    Hi guys.

Following on from my poll on who is interested in taking their Tig’s offroad (http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ad.php?t=39651), I was heartened to see there are a few of us, and even better is that there are 7 in Sydney. So I thought I’d follow it up trying to organise a GTG taking an easy day trek somewhere close to Sydney.

I have done the Yengo National Park trek, and the Tig will handle it without problems (even if you don’t have the Offroad Pack). So for our first outing I think it’s a sensible suggestion. It starts at Wisemans Ferry post office, and passes through St Albans heading up to Laguna. From there you head west into the Yengo National Park. I suggest we take the Boree track and head to the Burragurra Aboriginal Site. For beginner offroaders it’s quite a satisfying little track, and it’s a good place for a stop and get to know one another.

From there we can head up the Yango track via the Finchley Aboriginal Site and lookout, and then continue on to join the Howes Valley Trail. That ends up on Putty Rd where we can have another stop at the Halfway House. Putty Rd is a sealed road and a great drive back down to Colo Heights where we can then make our way back to Sydney.

The trek is about 140km’s in total and the Wisemans Ferry start is about 70km’s from Sydney. I’ll sort out route directions for everyone that comes, and if you have a UHF radio it’s probably not a bad idea. Once we have solid numbers we can sort out the finer details. Oh, and this is definitely a Wives, Girlfriends, and kids friendly outing. There’s nothing death defying about it at all.

Date wise, I’m suggesting Sunday 21 Feb. That should give enough warning. Let me know if you have other suggestions though. It’ll be nice to get a group together and get some nice pics of the Tigs for a banner.

(Based on my “4WD Treks Close to Sydney” book, and feedback from the guys over at ClubTouareg, the Turon River trek seemed to be a good suggestion. But I was put off by the river crossing which I have never done before and so would be reluctant to take a group of us on. If any of you know it and think it’s fine then please let me know. It’s from Sunny Corner to Sofala via the Turon River, starting about 170km’s out of Sydney. The trek is an easy 66km softroader friendly through the Turon State Forest and Winburndale Nature Reserve. A majority of the trek follows forestry roads and tracks.)

It may be worthwhile to have a Plan B - a tarmac/gravel alternative - if the weather doesn't work for us.

Yeah, to be honest this is pretty much a gravel and tar route. The only bit that I would consider to be anything more than that is the little off-shoot to the Burragurra Aboriginal Site which is totally optional. If the weather hasn't been great for a few days before we go, we can just skip that bit.

The rest of the route will simply get your Tig a little dirty and let you appreciate how good the Tig's suspension is.

              More details on track

Just to follow up with a bit more detail on the track, see below. You can see from looking at the Google Maps of the route that there are plenty of "easy out" option back onto tar if things are too rought and muddy.

Started at Wisemans Ferry - very good condition gravel road through St Albans and up past Mogo Camp.

After passing Mogo we press on North through the Bucketty Historic Precinct then up North on George Downs drive (tar road) towards Wollombi (some interesting convict trail culverts on the way which will be nice for a couple of pics)

Turn off the tar again onto the Finchley Track, then shortly after that left onto the Boree Track due South West. Rougher tracks that don’t see much traffic so they aren’t rutted, but by the same token they aren’t regularly maintained. I’d say they will be decent quality tracks even if it’s been raining lots.

Optional off-track is next. If it’s been bad weather we’ll skip it.

Then up the Boree Track due North till we get to the Yango Track heading off to our left.

Take Yango track and head past Finchley Camping site and head onto Howes Valley Trail. Similar quality to the Finchley and Boree Tracks.

Left into Putty Rd which is tar, and from there it’s tar all the way home.

              Check it on Google Maps

The more cars the better! If you can't get a Tig, I don't think anyone will mind if you come in a Touareg.

Is there a pub/cafe along the way, or is lunch BYO?

There is Wollombi which is about half way through the trek, and the Half Way House on Putty road where we can stop to pump up our tyres again and get something to eat. But we will only get there in the afternoon, so I was planning on bringing along an esky of food for some picnic/snack food along the way. If you guys just bring some drinks it should be enough. I'll bring my camping box with gas stove and billy to boil up tea/coffee too.

If you are bringing a UHF radio, I believe Channel 10 is the 4WD convoy channel, so that's the one we'll use.

From experience, it would be wise to bring some "dirty shoes" so that when you have to get out the car and get your shoes muddy , you can take them off and put them in a plastic bag afterwards so your interior doesn't get dirty

If you have good camera's/video camera's they might be wise to bring too as we only have a basic camera.

Well, it was an awesome day, and an awesome days off-roading. Thanks tons to Dave and his kids (Georgia and Ben), Jordan and Nichola, and Rod and Marilyn for a great day out. Thanks for the freebies too Dave!

The trek started at about 10am this morning from Wisemans Ferry and was predictably sedate for the first leg up to the Old Northern Road. We had a great little photo shoot at a convicts hold, and then headed to Yengo National Park.

Just off Boree track we had a bit of a play in a gravel pit to get a feel for our Tigs and what they could do. The vids of that will be posted when I get a chance. After that, because it was a good day, we decided to take the optional side trip to Burragurra Aboriginal Site. We were very cautious as we weren’t sure what the track would be like after all the rain of late, but it was fine. Bone dry, but very rutted. After tip-toeing our way down we had a picnic lunch at around 1:30pm. It was a nice little social and great to get to know one another a bit better.

With our confidence higher from the trip down, we made easy work of the drive back up to Boree track , then onto the Finchley track which joined the Howes Valley Trail. That trail was way more difficult than I had anticipated, and I think all of us felt it was a good challenge. It seemed to take forever, and when we eventually reached Putty Road at around 6pm, we all felt that we’d had a good day out. We said our thank you’s and good-byes, and went on our different ways from there.

Here are a couple of pics to get you started. There are more on the way.

Add our voices to Arctra's description of the day. Perfect weather, good company, great roads and of course great cars. Our Tig certainly did more than I had expected. The Tig has now been to the car wash and now looks new (well almost - it's done 2,731klms).

Sincere thanks to Arctra and his assistant for all of their work before we even started. Things like a survey trip over the roads, providing maps, providing CB's to those who did not have one, lunch and of course guidance on some of the trickier roads. Well done!!

Yesterday was fantastic and the weather couldn't have been better. It was like attending a 4WD tag-along tour. A big thank you to Dean and Shannon for organising everything; and also for taking point and being our guide.

My Tig was the only one without the off-road tech and I found it's limitations at the gravel pit. One of my front wheels was spinning in the air and there was not enough torque on the rear wheels to push me through. I had to reverse and have another attempt with more on the throttle.

Overall it was a great day... Today, however, was not so good as I had a lot of cleaning to do!
