Hi guys.
Following on from my poll on who is interested in taking their Tig’s offroad (http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ad.php?t=39651), I was heartened to see there are a few of us, and even better is that there are 7 in Sydney. So I thought I’d follow it up trying to organise a GTG taking an easy day trek somewhere close to Sydney.
I have done the Yengo National Park trek, and the Tig will handle it without problems (even if you don’t have the Offroad Pack). So for our first outing I think it’s a sensible suggestion. It starts at Wisemans Ferry post office, and passes through St Albans heading up to Laguna. From there you head west into the Yengo National Park. I suggest we take the Boree track and head to the Burragurra Aboriginal Site. For beginner offroaders it’s quite a satisfying little track, and it’s a good place for a stop and get to know one another.
From there we can head up the Yango track via the Finchley Aboriginal Site and lookout, and then continue on to join the Howes Valley Trail. That ends up on Putty Rd where we can have another stop at the Halfway House. Putty Rd is a sealed road and a great drive back down to Colo Heights where we can then make our way back to Sydney.
The trek is about 140km’s in total and the Wisemans Ferry start is about 70km’s from Sydney. I’ll sort out route directions for everyone that comes, and if you have a UHF radio it’s probably not a bad idea. Once we have solid numbers we can sort out the finer details. Oh, and this is definitely a Wives, Girlfriends, and kids friendly outing. There’s nothing death defying about it at all.
Date wise, I’m suggesting Sunday 21 Feb. That should give enough warning. Let me know if you have other suggestions though. It’ll be nice to get a group together and get some nice pics of the Tigs for a banner.
(Based on my “4WD Treks Close to Sydney” book, and feedback from the guys over at ClubTouareg, the Turon River trek seemed to be a good suggestion. But I was put off by the river crossing which I have never done before and so would be reluctant to take a group of us on. If any of you know it and think it’s fine then please let me know. It’s from Sunny Corner to Sofala via the Turon River, starting about 170km’s out of Sydney. The trek is an easy 66km softroader friendly through the Turon State Forest and Winburndale Nature Reserve. A majority of the trek follows forestry roads and tracks.)
