My friend has a 147 and when she turns the engine off it keeps running for a period of time. She has had it checked but the they couldn't find anything wrong. Apparently it corrected itself but has recently started doing the same thing again. Anyone had any similar problems?

The owner hasn't tried driving the car but thinks she probably could. Apparently the fault is intermittent and hasn't ocurred since I first posted the problem on the forum. The engine only stops when she gets back in the car and puts the key back in the ignition and jiggles it around.103 TDI Biscay Blue, black leather, comfort pack, mats, tow bar, off road, fogs

Mate,
what your friend is experiencing is called a turbo timer.
Basically the turbo heats up when you drive the vehicle. If you drive the vehicle hard and then just turn the switch and walk away, the rapid decline in temperature can cause horriffic damage to the engine. To counteract this issue, you install a turbo timer to keep the car idling for a few minutes until the temp drops to a safe level. You can safely take the key and walk away. When the car has cooled enough, it will shut itself off.
Nothing to worry about. If anything, its a great thing!

.... ???? .... mate, turbo timers are not common to VWs as the coolling pumps keep on circulating coolant if required after switch-off.Originally posted by dponnudurai View PostMate,

Therefore I'd be very surprised if indeed this 147 had 1 fitted as it serves no real purpose on modern VWs ..... I'd be even more surprised if somebody managed to wire 1 into a Tiguan without causing some serious other issues ....
I'd suggest this owner of the car to contact VW urgently .....Current: 2023 MY23 T-Roc R Lapiz Blue + Beats Audio + Black pack 2018 MY19 Golf R manual Lapiz Blue + DAP) 2014 Amarok TSI Red (tuned over 200kw + lots of extras) 2013 Up! manual Red 2017 Polo GTI manual Black Previous VWs and some others ...

Does this apply to TDI range?? The engine always continue to run for 30sec+ whenever we stop the ignition and the key pulled on. It seems to do this when the engine is warmed up. My friend who has a toureg has a engine does the same thing and i was told it's the engine is warming down in that case.Originally posted by dponnudurai View PostMate,

Doesn't happen on any of the petrol tigs or turbo golfs that I have experienced in the last 12 months. And the the 2 TDI's that I drove - hard, didn't continue running either. The cooling fans etc do keep running, but not the engine. These can run for a few seconds to a few minutes, depending on the temps.

REALLY ??????? your TDi Tiguan runs for 30 seconds AFTER you take out the key ?? NOT just the fans ?? If that's the case there's something definitely wrong with your Tig cos they don't have any form of turbo timer whatsoever. I've owned 4 new turbo diesels now and none of them came with a turbo timer fitted. With a modern system such as the Tig's there's no need for one unless you live in the country and go from hammering the heck out of it for many miles to "switch off", in which case it's probably better practice to allow it to spool down for a minute or so.Originally posted by mikeinbris View PostDoes this apply to TDI range?? Its been said here a few times now .... but just to make it absolutely clear .... the cooling fans can coolant pumps can and will run for up to a few minutes after the car is switched off and the key removed. These are all quite noisey but do not confuse it with the engine running.
THE engine SHOULD NOT be running after it is switched off. If it does, there is a problem and a VW dealer should investigate. It is VERY unlikely to a turbo timer (99.999% actually) as these are not common to VWs.Current: 2023 MY23 T-Roc R Lapiz Blue + Beats Audio + Black pack 2018 MY19 Golf R manual Lapiz Blue + DAP) 2014 Amarok TSI Red (tuned over 200kw + lots of extras) 2013 Up! manual Red 2017 Polo GTI manual Black Previous VWs and some others ...

Checked again last night, it's definitely just the fan that keep running after ignition's off, not the engine.Originally posted by Sharkie View PostIts been said here a few times now .... but just to make it absolutely clear .... the cooling fans can coolant pumps can and will run for up to a few minutes after the car is switched off and the key removed. sorry about the confusion there....

LMAO at this thread! priceless!
vw build there cars for there thermo fans to kick in after ignition and keys are out and when the temperature is at a set temp (hot), my 1977 mk1, 85 cabrio, and 92 passat all do this, its nothing out of the norm for volkswagen, and there is no such thing of volkswagen programming the motor to keep running after the keys are out the ignition
