  • Tiguan 125TSI acceleration noise

Just grab my new Tiguan 125TSI (Silver Leaf) last Friday in Vic.

When I did every deep acceleration (D3-D4), I just hear some little grating
sound from the engine. But when I released the throttle, the noise stopped. Is there anyone who has met this problem?

    Waiting for the reply!

It sounds like the complaint I had with my147TSI, it makes a rattle type noise on hard acceleration, some says it's the turbo, some say it's the direct injection?

Check out this thread on Vortex, a few Aussie 125TSI owners posted on here too.

Here's my old thread from this forum:

I figured it's normal seen as so many people experience what seems to be the same sound.

Ummm .... its called engine running sounds ....

but seriously ... mine has always been a little gruff (almost sounds diesel like) in 1st gear at low to medium revs. Before the Carbonio went it in it went quiet from medium revs onwards untill it made some nice noises at high rpm.

Since the Carbonio went on its still a bit gruff at low speeds but at medium to high rpm it now sounds very nice indeed.

If you think its not right, take it to a dealer ASAP and have them listen to it. Take a demo for a drive and compare the noise it makes. Make them fix it if it sounds different to the demo .....

Sounds to me like your transmission. I haven't heard any grating sounds coming from mine (but I have a manual). There are lots of other noises (they are not a quiet engine by any means - just listen outside to the racket at idle), but a grating sound at speed? I get some turbo noise, but no grating

          leonmann,

I have the 125TSI auto - it goes like a rocket and sounds like one too on hard acceleration. To describe how it sounds is very difficult. Sometimes the sequence of different sounds seems to be quite illogical, but this doesn't happen very often. Mostly it is just harsh tractor-like sound. Gentle acceleration is fine.

During my pre-purchase test drive the dealer got very upset every time I wanted tu put my foot down on the accelerator, so I did not know the full story. Following delivery, I was a bit upset about the noises, so I went to test drive a demo Tiguan again at another dealer. He did not go with me, so I could test it properly. It sounded exactly the same as my Tig.

After 5000 km I sort of got used to it. However, there is a chance that there is something loose somewhere, and if there was a fix I would be interested to hear about it.

          Now to the point:
I live in Glen Waverley, only a few km down Springvale road from East Doncaster. If you are interested send me an email and perhaps we can arrange some 'scientific' comparison. It could be interesting.

          Joe

            This has been discussed at length on VW Vortex and the general consensus seems to be that its the direct injection that makes this noise at low revs and its perfectly normal and harmless. Have a read;

I have read them and don't dispute the findings. But some members say that their cars are not noisy. If this is true it means that there must be a fix for the noisy cars.

I suspect that "noise is in the ear of the listener" !!!! and I doubt there's much "actual" difference from car to car (same model, engine and transmission of course).

                  Just checked it now

                  Hi Joe and andother mates,

Just checked this problem with the dealership service manager 8am this morning. This grating sound is from one part of the exhaust when you have a deep acceleration because of high pressure there. This is form the flexible junction from the pipe. Absolutely normal. They has give us a promise that if we'd like they can arrange 5 brand new Tiguan from THEIR stock for letting us test. So if anybody is interested in, please tell me. All in all, TSI engine is not a very quite as we imagining.

Joe, we can have a time to meet somewhere if you like. Just compare the "noise".

                  Leon

In the past I was worried that my car was a Monday job. I used to hear engine noises which seemed to be sort of out of place. Yesterday I tried several 'hard' accellerations but apart from being noisy it sounded all right. I am getting used to it and my wife even likes it. (She always wanted to have an Alfa Romeo )

Things are getting bit bussy now, so I am happy to postpone the meet. Should you have some new twist on this please let us know.

                    Joe

It should be very quiet at running speeds though.
