  • Can't trust your dealer's service dept

Found something else interesting about the MY10s and MY09s today ....

The shopping bag hooks (2 x chrome under the luggage cover) have been deleted for MY10 onwards ....

I HAD them in mine (MY09) and when I was in at the dealer to have my radio upgrade fitted they swapped them out for a MY10 they delivered that day ....... .... without telling me and hoping I would not notice ...

SO ... when I found out upon a recent shopping trip that they had mysteriously dissappeared I made the dealer replace them today .......

shocking ...... needless to say I won't be going back there for a service and leave my car unsupervised in their care .....

That is shameful. I am presuming this is the dealer you bought your Tig from originally? Can you at least confirm that is was NOT Gold Coast VW as I have my Tig booked in for it's 15000km service in Dec (as I that is where I predict I'll be when I am due a service so won't be able to get it done at Chatswood Classic which is the dealer I got my Tig from - who I am happy with for the record).

Sharkie, if you want to push a point, it might just be that what they perpetrated amounts to theft. The common law offence of larceny (theft) requires a number of highly articulated elements to be satisfied in order to obtain a conviction - which perhaps this does?:

First, the offence only applies to tangible forms of moveable property.
Secondly, that property must belong to another--that is, be in the possession of another person...
Thirdly, the accused must, at least temporarily, take the property out of the other person's possession.
Fourthly, this taking must occur without the consent of the other person.
Fifthly, the thief must intend to permanently deprive the victim of the possession of the property.
Sixthly, the thief must act in a way that is fraudulent.

Seems to me they just ticked all the boxes! I'd be after something - and it wouldn't involve leaving my vehicle anywhere near them!

I don't think I'd be mentioning their name here though.

Seriously Sharkie I'd be climbing over the dealer's desk and giving him a very loud and expensive lesson in theft, manners and treatment of clients. I would also be writing to VW direct and demanding an apology and compensation. This is TOTALLY unacceptable and the dealer would be working VERY hard to ensure I didn't take him to court for theft, believe me SOMEBODY would be paying for this BIG TIME.

Well I agree if the dealer removed the hooks that were delivered with your vehicle, that is a down right cut and dried case of THEFT. I would seek compensation and NOT let the dealer get away with it. I would take it up with the CEO of VW Aust and even look at other avenues if unhappy. VACC, NRMA etc for instance.

I went through the baggage hook debacle earlier this year : refer post

I was told by VW Aust over the phone a load of crap. They told me the TDI model never had baggage hooks fitted and only the 147 TSI model had them.
I worked out for a fact that after around towards the end of February 2009 they stopped fitting them.
Personally I feel it is just VW trying to save a few bucks. I have kept my blanking plates so when I get rid of my Tig I will swap them out if I get an updated Tig and need them. Anyone need the Parts no & cost involved contact me.

Did the dealer confirm this is what occurred? Did blanking plugs get put in the place of where the chrome hooks were located?

In a much earlier post I queried if the Tig had any hooks, after which Tedhaggie pointed them out and my wife happily started using them ..... then about a week ago after a shopping trip she found the hooks were gone and blanking plugs were installed in its place ......

My Tig is 1 of the last MY09 builds - May 09 - and had it fitted.

I meant did the dealer say anything about taking them out and putting them into the other car or have they just shrugged their shoulders and offered to replace them? Did they put the blanking plugs in their place (I gathered there is a plug there when you don't have them fitted?)

Pretty much the shrug and replacement after a half hearted attempt to say it wasn't a std fitment. Pointed at a MY10 to prove it was not there, and I pointed at another MY09 in there for a service to prove it was there as std ..... after which the shrug & replacement.

Seriously, a "shrug and replacement" of a STOLEN item wouldn't even be the START of what they'd be doing if this was done to me. Frankly there'd be absolute hell to pay !!!!!!!!!!

Time for a call to the TV stations to set these guys up with a car investigation with hidden cameras to see what other shifty practices they get up to. I am referring to Today Tonight or A Current Affair.
So I go in with a car mats, and they get removed and they say "not standard". What a load of lies. I personally feel this dealer needs to be taught a lesson. What they did to your car is like stealing your street directory, or coins in the money compartment.

I have had close talks with an ex VW Mechanic and he told me some stories how they fix squeaks in a brand new beetle with packaging foam. This same dealer's Service Manager even preached how bad VWs were made and that it kept the mechanics in a job and they were lucky for that. Can you believe this guy? The VW brand deserves better than the calibre of these types and should be ousted.

After all would you take your car back to this dealer ever again?

Not knowing enough about the new radio installation (ie did they have to take these plugs off to install the new radio/speakers??) but I reckon you'd be hard pressed to prove theft. The dealer would just plead that they took them off, lost them and hence just replaced them with the plugs. Lost is not theft.

But hey, I'd still be going for everything I could from the dealer with the threat of the "theft" word. Good luck.
