Spacer goodness on RS4 Reps

I've said this before in relation to the DVD in Motion debate, and I think it warrants mention again.

From the original post you cannot deduce whether Pullstarter intends using spacers on his Tig just to see what the wheels look like (so you're right, you would need to be clairvoyant to pick that up) or whether he intended to use them on the road (although you were apparently clairvoyant to pick that up - just taking a humourous dig at you).

Pullstarter stated something, another poster questioned the legality, and the OP then responded in such a manner as to indicate he was aware there was a legal issue at play but did not see the relevance. Duty of care by those in the know is therefore complete... there was no need to continue to drive the point home any further IMO.

Granted, the added info on the pitfalls of spacers outside of just the legal are interesting, as I hadn't considered the load bearing of the lip, but once again it was put across in a dramatised "assume you're going to be in the worst possible circumstances when it happens" manner rather that just stating the facts or giving friendly advice.

All in all, the legal/insurance/etc points are valid, were noted, and let's just move on from there. I understand where Pullstarters frustration is coming from, but I also appreciate your concern as a citizen using the public roads you felt there was a risk of the spacers being used on. I think we all get the idea here so let's move along... nothing to see here

I wasnt driving a legal issue home, it had already been stated and once was enough. My comment was about insurance, and its potential negative effect on pullstarter.

I work in insurance and have already recognised that, since the GFC, insurance companies are really tightening up and using 'technicalities' to avoid paying out on claims.

i'm not a technical nor mechanical expert, and i rely on other members' advice from time to time. I was was merely hoping to give back some information that i have a bit of specialism in, that might be useful to others

As you mentioned, the 'better' ones are the those that have the spiggot or mounting shoulder as the studs hold the wheel onto the spiggot to take the load. Most people immediately think that the studs are supposed to take the load.

As you stated you're aware of the legal issues. Good to know and spacers on a Tiguan probably wouldn't attract too much attention and you stated they're temporary anyway...

Spacers on a high-performance sports car need more attention as people push the car. Yes some race cars may use them, but they're typically not a daily driver, have suspension setups that may or may not factor in spacers and are maintained differently to a once a year 15,000km serviced road car. In that sense a recommendation generally points to getting the correct wheel with the correct offset...

Regarding the insurance issue. I have all my mods listed on insurance, so it would make it nigh on impossible for them to not payout because of those mods.
BUT none of the mods I have done are prima facie illegal, whereas spacers are illegal.

They are also something that is attached directly to the wheels and in the steering and braking systems. So it would be hard to argue that they don't have some effect on those things.
Whereas, a pod filter that is listed on insurance could be legal or illegal but it would be hard for anyone to argue that your pod filter caused you to hit the pedestrian or crash.

I would not fit anything to the car which is illegal that has a physical presence. EG I have bashed out a few cats in my time for off road racing use of course as it is not something anyone is going to check when they are scouring a wrecked car. if the car is totalled they are not going to be able to start it to check emissions.
