Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • eBay VAG-COM cable ob Tig?

    Hi guys.

Has anyone tried one of the eBay VAG-COM cables on their Tig? Like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....m=390031928131

It says it only works on non-CANBUS VW's, and I believe the Tig is a CANBUS based vehicle. Or would it be "backward compatible" so to speak? I would have thought it just acts line an OBD-II cable then? All I really want it for at the moment is for monitoring of error codes, loggin of telemetry (revs, engine temps, etc), and maybe the graphing available in VAGCOM software.

Would love anyones feedback on this.

Buy the original from ross-tech, the ebay cables are absolute rubbish that have no protection built in to protect the car or the notebook, only work with a specific version of pirated Vagcom/VCDS and you're just wasting your time with something that will be frustrating to use with no support from ross-tech.

I wouldn't spend money on non-genuine VCDS cable and software. Get the proper one it’s worth it. Ross-tech upgrades the software regularly, upgrade is free, it is a good product it works on all VAG cars and you get free support if you need it.
I bought mine 4 years ago from OZ distributor and I don't regret it.

I have the FleeBay cable working on my Mk3, not sure about compatibility with the Tig, but my thoughts for the Mk3 are as follows.

The Ross-Tech software that works is an older version and can be downloaded for free, it is however limited unless you have a proper cable (or serial number or dongle or however they work it).

You can still scan for error codes, you can still reset error codes although it's not automated like the proper version of the software.

You can read measuring blocks and get temps etc (if there are in the right range that the limited version of the software lets you access).

In reality I use my cable to check and reset codes, nothing more, for $20 it was worth it. Unless you plan on really working on your car I don't know that most people can easily justify a $500 cable.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
