  • Another quick update.
Called Privatefleet today and they are putting out a tender for a Biscay Blue 125 TSI Manual.

I have been told to expect a call this afternoon with the various prices the dealers have put forward.
They should be able to do better than i could manage as they have corporate discount to play with and assumably VW will know they are serious as opposed to not even contacting me or offering me a discounted price above the actual drive away price on the tv advert.

If i decide to go ahead with the purchase, a $170 membership fee must be paid and it gives you lifetime membership to Privatefleet and a variety of motoring related discounts (i.e. tyres etc)
They also deliver the car to my door with a full tank of fuel.

Sounds pretty good so far, all the internet searches i have done have provided more positives than negatives.

Will update with the prices and if a purchase is to be arranged.

      • Quick update.

They tacked my order onto a bulk buy for a QLD Pharmaceutical company.
My request pushes the bulk buy to 7 cars.

They said it will reduce the discounted price from 37,130 drive away to somewhere around 36,500 drive away for a 125 TSI manual in Biscay Blue.
It is also a 2010 build.

I get the details tonight/tomorrow morning and decide whether to go ahead or not.

The original drive away price was 39,500 based on full retail.
This gives me a 3k discount with no work done by me at all and it only costs a $178 membership fee which pays for itself through the benefits i can use.

        • yeh also be interested to see how you go, hopefully good, cant remember if private fleet but I tried one and they didn't come back with any decent offers.

best offers seem to be negotiated with the dealer who has the car in stock, though appreciate this didn't quite work out for you

I saw a white 125 manual in the Syd Morning herald last w/e for around 35 on road, though may have been demonstrator albeit with <500k on the clock.

Still might be worth checking some adds, if you can get onto someone, a cheap flight down to Sydney and drive back might still be worthwhile (on a registered vehicle permit), then Reg in QLD.

In any event, hope you get what you want at the right price

          • Still waiting on the official information to come through from Private Fleet.

I saw the white 125 manual in Sydney, It's 36,945

My price should be less than that and a 2010 build in metallic blue.

Will update again when i get the official info.

That's an 8% discount on the figures you gave. 6 months ago 10% was readily achievable, but I know car sales have recovered recently, which may erode your bargaining ability.
Also, have Tiguans gone up that much in th last 6 months? I thought a base Tiguan should be around $37 on road

I wasn't in a position to purchase the car 6 months ago unfortunately wher as now i have a job.

Austral haven't contacted me after numerous emails, Northstar offered a drive away price of 37k (reduced thanks to my trade in and potential cash payment) which was above the drive away price on the advert even though i was advised by email that 34k could be achieved.

As i am only going with metallic paint as an option, i don't really have much to bargain with so 8% is pretty reasonable i think.

The base tiguan drive away is 36,990 according to the advert but no dealer is giving me a figure close to that value all saying it is a new car and they can't discount it that much and that supply is still outstripping demand.

I get the paperwork tomorrow to read over and sign if i want to go ahead with the purchase.

                • Final update.

Privatefleet got the car down to 37,040 with floor mats but i had to sign today and pay a membership fee of $178.

I called Highway VW (Springwood) and they said they can do 37k with floor mats or 36,900 without mats.
I have decided to go with Highway VW and secured the car for 37K.

The contract actually stated an auto transmission but i had it changed to manual.
I probably should have left it as auto and ended up saving an extra 1.8K but in the end i wanted manual and the auto will cost more than 1.8K if it breaks.

Will update the spreadsheet with the purchase.

Finally organise purchase of my TIG!
Building starts late February and i should expect delivery in June.

Turns out I get a 9% discount from RRP
Not bad for no options to bargain with adn no corporate/fleet discount.

                    Well done. 9% is reasonable.
I neglected to say that the 10%+ of the past was with the Corp discount. That's worth and extra $2k off.
Corp discount is not that hard to achieve. It costs your company nothing to sign up to the programme, its non binding, and anyone can sign. You then sign a second form showing that you're an employee of that company. The corp discount comes out of VWA's pocket, not the dealer, so there would be no kick back if you did this even now. Start sweet talking the HR Admin.

I had considered this but I am not in a permanent position at work and the QLD Government doesn't like to arrange anything without boxes and boxes of red tape, so it wouldn't be approved anyway.

In the end I get it at a price I find reasonable, got 9% discount without having to haggle at all and with no actual corporate/fleet discount and I can sell my car privately for more than double what VW were offering me originally.

                      Just a side note:
Apparently the 36,990 drive away advert is actually 36,990 + dealer delivery.
Even though it clearly states 36,990 drive away on the tv advert i have seen over the last few days.

Tried calling VW head office and they don't even have a copy of the advert and wouldn't talk to me about the about dealer over-pricing at all.
Asked Highway VW and they said that it wasn't a a drive away price and delivery charges were layed on top of that.

                      Bit of misscommunication going on.
Just be aware that the advert is not being followed.

If your advertising rules are the same as here in NZ they could be forced to sell you one "as advertised". Additionally they could be fined for "false advertising" and would probably have to refund everybody who wasn't given the stated deal, it would cost them ten of thousands if not hundreds of thousands. The consumer protection boys are very hot on things like that here.

                        • Someone should tape that add ... and quickly ...

I saw a bit of it last night and there is fine print on it which I'd need to study, but it did say driveaway from $36990. This means for a white manual 125TSI you should get it for that price or it is indeed false advertising.

The ACCC and any of the TV Shows (TT and CA) would love to hear about it if the dealers refuse to sell it at that price .... they can be forced to do so as by law they are not allowed to advertise anything now as driveaway that still has hidden costs in it.

                          • I was sitting in front of the tv all last night with the video camera trying to film the add if it came on but it didn't.

In the end i got 37000 drive away with metallic paint and floor mats but i had to argue that i could get 37k before they would even offer me a figure that low.

It is annoying and i would have gone through the ACCC or TT/ACA if they wouldnt' budge on pricing.
                            Northstar were the worst.
