Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

what tyres do most have on standard 16" wheels, mine are Hankooks

look very much like a road tyre, thinking of getting something a bit more chunky, any suggestions or experience?

also, anyone aware of some reasonably priced 17" wheels?

    and so the journey starts....

If I ever got Hankook tyres on a VW, I'd take it back and demand proper tyres. Hankooks are made in Korea and are some of the worst possible tyres you can fit......

Have a look on Ebay .... there are a number of suitable VW/Audi clone wheels out there. This morning I had a look at RS6 clones for about $800 in 18" ..... Scroll down to the RS6 style ...

I think they would look very good on a Tiguan.

Can't agree with you mate. Hankook tyres on my T5 will outlast original tyres the van came on: Michelin Pilot Primacy at around $500.00 each and were good for only 25,000km with tyre rotating every 5,000km and some T5 drivers didn't even get that far on the original tyres.
I've done 20,000km on Hankook ($195 each) and only difference I can see is I still have 3/4 of the tread left on.

The Michelin Pilot Primacy are a sport tyre the Hankooks are a economy tyre.

God only knows why Michelin were put on a van, they go great on my GTI esp on the track, but I only expect 20K from them.

Is that why they use Hankook in Motorsport? For the economy, that is interesting.

                purchased mine from Pickerings too.
have just changed to Pirelli Scorpion STR, traded hankooks for $100 each, so all up set me back just over $400.
very happy with the new tyres. More grip, presence, chunk, and ofroadability!

I would love to see a T5 running Formula 3 tyres

So which Hankook tyres did you put on your T5 ?

I would probably class them as an economy tyre given that they cost less than $200 each and look like getting 60,000km life.

Pilot sport tyres are not built for long life - they are made for really good grip only, not something most commercial van owners are looking for.

I'm a commercial van owner, which is looking for good grip and braking performance in the tyre and Hankook didn't disappoint me.

                      Hankook DynaPro are rated as
                      Treadware: 500, Traction:A

                      Michelin Primacy are rated as
                      Treadware:240, Traction:AA (Top score)

So they are not at all in the same category.
You could easily expect twice the mileage with a slight compromise on grip. Those Michelins are really not suited to a van.

Anyway, so what is good for the Tiguan ??

well, I RATHER like these... the tread on the tyres is a pretty damn sporty one too, but road noise could be a issue...
