  • Is Gearbox Oil Change Needed Tiguan 5N

Hi I have recently bought a Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI 4Motion Automatic, 2010, that has been driven for 230 000 km in total.

I have no problems with the transmission and it shifts the gears well. However, in my experience, changing the oil in the gearbox after a certain amount of miles / kilometres is considered good practice.

To my surprise, the main dealership here in Sweden did not want to take the car in for an oil change in the gearbox since they consider it to be something that shouldn't be changed at all.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Do you change the oil in preventive purposes or can it really last as long as the car is functioning well?

It is sensible if history is unknown to do a full service after buying

I would definitely be changing the transmission and rear differential oils on a car of that age and kilometres if you have no history of the service having being done by the previous owner.

but the dealership has said they dont recommend changing the oil at all ?

do you guys know something more than mechanics and dealerships? sounds like it from all your posts.

the guy just stated the transmission and gearing is working perfectly.

If it was my car , I would go to another dealership. I have been a member of several forums around the world for around 20 years & the one that comes up regularly on the autos is disregard what the manufacturer says about the autos don't need to have the oil changed.
If as a result of NOT changing the oil the trans you have a failure neither the dealer or manufacturer will come to your rescue other than we can offer you a new one for thousands of dollars.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

usually the first signs of a gearbox oil needing change is sluggish gear shifts, noises or a noticeable behaviour like something is not right.. itd be safe to assume the services have been done by the previous owner.... with a 10+ year old car a gearbox can **** itself anyway with having new oil.... but knowing there are so many mechanical tech experts concentrated on this one forum im just going to go with the herd...

change gearbox and engine oils every 1,000kms - 2,000kms and make sure you make detailed photographic posts each time you do

Its pretty well known that many car brands say the gearbox is filled for life/no servicing required which is quite obviously a sales tactic because they want the transmission to fail 7-10 years later once the car is out of warranty and onto its 2nd or 3rd owner in most cases - because instead of forking out 10k for a new transmission the owner will buy a brand new (or newer 2nd hand) car and VW will do their best to sell you that new car.

The owner of this Tiguan can do as he pleases, but the cost of an oil change is much cheaper than the cost of a new transmission if/when it may fail. The transmission will have a much better chance of putting in another 10 years of service with fresh oil and a new filter in it.

A lot of inputs and different opinions, it's really a tricky one. There is very little known about the cars history regarding regular services and if they have been done at all, but inspecting the state of the car and digging in to the little information about it I can find, I am assuming there has not been a lot of regular servicing done on this car.

My conclusion for this issue, based on the answers provided in this thread is that it's not uncommon to change the oil in the gearbox of the auto and it could be a good idea to do it despite what the dealership tells me.

My next question would be, are there any particular risks of doing this? (I assume not, especially if an experienced mechanic is doing the job).

I may be a bit late by I would 100% be changing the oil and filter in the gearbox. At those km and age and unknown history, if the oil comes out a bit suss, I would drive it for 5k km and do it again if you want to keep the car for a long period of time as you won't get the old oil out of the converter as well when draining. As others have said here, change all fluids on purchase so you know you have a good service base line. Any secondhand car I buy has this done ASAP regardless of service history.
