Ignition Coils

I have a MY 2010, 125 TSI

Today the cylinder No.1 ignition coil failed 2km out of home. This is according to a RACV mechanic. I believe him - the engine was clearly misfiring.

Is this normal for a car with 65,000km ? Should I replace only the failed coil, or would it be advisable to replace all 4?

I watched a couple of Youtube videos - it is not difficult, and doesn't take long to replace the coils, undoing the connector seems to be the tricky part.
So I suppose it can be done by any decently skilled mechanic, if the VW guys are too busy.

Where to get the replacement coils from? Is there another source apart from VW dealers?

I’ve had a coil go and it’s not fun running on 3 cylinders.

Dealer should have them or most VW workshops should have them or be able to get them quickly.

I know BMR Autowerkes stocks the R8 ones which are a good upgrade.

Mine went under warranty and VW just replaced a single coil pack.

Personally I’d either buy 2 (and keep a new one in the boot) or replace all 4 and keep a used one as a spare in your boot. Also add a couple of looped zip ties to pull the coil out.

It’s probably unlucky that you’ve had one go but not that uncommon either.

(just in case this may help somebody)

I ended up replacing only the faulty one.
I need the car to be on the road this week, and I could not get in a hurry the cheaper ($52) Audi red R8 coils that are so "promoted" on various VW forums (fora?).
So I had to buy one from VW parts for $128.
I replaced it myself, as the VW dealer quoted $370 labour for a 15 minute job. I found one local mechanic who would do it for $130, but it is easy to do.
