  • Windscreen Replacement

Hi All. I have a crack in my windscreen, and while I am persisting with it for now, it will need to be replaced soon. Does anyone have any suggestions about who to get one from and if there are any I should avoid. Happy to go OEM or aftermarket based on recommendations. The car has the auto wiper sensor, so just want to be sure that everything will go OK. Will probably travel to Canberra to get the replacement unless it makes no difference having it fitted in my little town. Cheers.

I had the windscreen in my Octavia cracked by a rock whilst down the south coast.
Had it replaced by the local auto glass place in Nowra. They used a local supplier (Australian Auto Glass or something).
Windscreen has the RLS and has been fine since it was installed over 12 months ago.

That would depend on if you have free windscreen replacement in your policy ?
If you do i would be going genuine as there is no loss to your insurance ,

A few years ago I have my Caddy windscreen replaced with an Aussie IR and Heat Reflective windscreen. It cost me more but it was a tougher glass that is used in Coaches and also had the built in radio antenna.

Just make sure that the aftermarket on you get has the spot for the rain sensor and antenna.

O’Brien’s were great at sourcing me a genuine Mercedes glass that had rain sensor too and infect the initial Merc windscreen had a slight defect which they picked up. I’m fussy but would not have noticed.

Nova did mine last year. All i can suggest is to get whoever does it to be really careful with where the glass meets the top of the opening when they remove the broken screen... My ceiling lining didn't quite recover, & within 3 months, the whole lining started to sag, which started right at the front where it meets the glass.

The Windscreen in my 2013 103TDi cracked in February. I had it replaced with the OEM unit at Bayside VW in Melbourne.
I did the usual ring around to Windscreen O'Brien, Instant Windscreens etc.
Each company told me the vehicle required something different regarding rain sensors, light sensors, glass thickness, insulation and inbuilt antenna.
When I questioned each on what the previous company had said they were they were all dismissive of each other..
Hence I went with the OEM, in total, it worked out about $300 more expensive this way. While VW supplied the screen, they get a subcontractor in to do it anyway...

I did figure out during the research though, that the Diesel cars have a thicker windscreen than the petrol models for better engine noise insulation....fact or fiction...I dunno..
