  • Has anyone heard of Laborde Motorsport / LM Tuning? Apparently Perth based.

A workshop I like and respect in Brisbane is offering their Stage 1 ECU and TCU tune for $980 until end of July across all MQB cars, I'm tempted as it includes the TCU tune.

    • Some bad feedback on Perth Facebook VW Group - I don't have any direct experience but have a look for yourself.

Seems pretty cheap for both files. But yes as per previous post LM Tuning has left more than one customer unhappy.

Best to do your research but if I was in Brisbane the places I’d talk to are Ben at Tarmac Engineering, Guy at Harding Performance or Prestige and Performance who are one of the APR dealers. Generally hear good things from these guys.

If it’s cheap there’s usually a reason. Unfortunately it’s only when things don’t go right that you find out whether you’re dealing with a reputable business or one that fobs you off and goes onto the next paying customer.

I'd never heard of them, probably for a reason! Was interested because it was both ECU and TCU.

Ben (Spectune) had run a special for the combo in previous years for EOFY but didn't see it this year. I will probably end up going with him, still have an eye out for an IS38 too...

This my experience, overall still very happy with it.
Fuel economy has increased to about 11-12L/100km with mostly urban driving. I think this is a worthwhile cost for improved performance.

What was your fuel economy like pre-tune?

From memory it was 8-9L/100km around town.

fair jump, but glad to hear the cost is offset by the jump in performance.

                      • Hi everyone - I'm looking to pull the trigger on a JB4 kit from AutoInstruct/direct from BMS. Trying to search this thread but can't seem to use the search function due to minimum character requirements.

A few questions to whoever has one installed in their 162.

                        1. How do you find it and what map do you run?
                        2. Any experience with the 98RON map?
                        3. The install looks easy and is touted as "plug and play" "undetectable by dealer" etc. but then requires you to use a Posi-Tap on the AFR wire... Is that 100% necessary? Note: Claims about being undetectable by the dealer are taken with a pinch of salt. I understand the concept of, "pay to play".
                        5. Is it really necessary to run the OBD cable through the firewall to the OBD port? If so, do you remove it prior to service?
                        6. Did you purchase yours direct from BMS or through AutoInstruct? BMS seems to come in cheaper, by quite a bit. Even after factoring shipping, GST and exchange rate.

Thanks in advance! Thought I'd throw those questions out here before I email George @ BMS.

                        • I think most people that aren’t too concerned with getting flagged just get a “proper” flash tune.

Everyone that has gone the JB4 route that I know ends up with a stage 1 tune and having to try and sell the JB4 at a reduced rate.

Whether or not they are undetectable is still up for debate as there aren't many cases of a soft modification causing an issue warranty wise.

My advice would be to keep a fairly good relationship with your dealership during the warranty period and flash it stage 1. If the wheel falls off then it will still be covered under warranty. If you blow the turbo (unlikely) then you can upgrade to stage 3. Most cases of destroyed engine are due to poor maintenance schedules once tuned anyway.

I'd be more worried about a gearbox issue (still way too common) and having to fight VW Australia on a warranty claim once the drivetrain warranty is flagged.

Have to agree. There's been a number of reported gearbox issues with 2017 cars which although is probably still pretty low % numbers is more than almost zero for DQ500 in gen1 Tigs.
