Sure ill just go off and spend thousands of dollars and many hours of time proving this information just to satisfy you.

Im not guessing anything, this is well known information. The vast majority of us use our cars in what is described as “severe conditions” in the owners manual (lots of short trips, lots of cold starts, hot/dusty environment, lots of idling, stop/start traffic etc) and in these cases they recommend 6 month or 7,500km services.

I’ll stick with my 6 monthly oil changes knowing I am doing the best I can for my engine, as it satisfy’s me. Even if it is considered overkill by some, it only costs a small amount of $ to do as I always buy the oil when its on special, and gives me satisfaction to do some basic maintenance on my car and check everything over while its on stands.

Id much rather have an over-serviced car than an under-serviced car.

The only true way to find out about the condition of your oil is an oil analysis.

But for the sake of $100 and an hour of your time, it gives you peace of mind.

For my own MkV GTI, I change every 7,500km as by then I've already topped up oil twice and due to top it up a 3rd time.

I use 5w40 502/505 which I can buy on sale for $30. Mann oil filter is like $10. So $40 for me.

I do the regulat services myself (and leave the harder stuff for my VW specialist) so going under the car gives me a chance to check for leaks, split hoses, CV boots etc.

My dealer used that version of valvoline for the first 3 services in 2009/10/11. Here we are 206,000km later and the engine still runs beautifully with no oil usage. It is 504/507 compliant.

I've done UOA twice on the 15k service interval (60k & 120k) and both times the oil tested as-new in terms of viscosity and additive pack, etc. This is with 70% highway driving. If you operate under any of the severe service conditions then it might be a good idea to pull it back to 10k km.

NB: 15k/12m service intervals are with VW502/505. Variable/2yr is 504/507. So in Au we over spec the oil for the 15k service interval.
