Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

That part is normal- and actually good. Adds an extra layer of protection against mistakenly opening the bonnet when driving/reaching for something else.
It’s designed that way, with the location of the bonnet release and door trims.

Use an app like Waze to give you a rough idea of your current speed (just to get to the dealer)

Just an update. Dropped the Tig at the stealership this morning. Will know later today what the issue is. They said they haven't seen this before. At least covered by warranty.

“Havent seen before” is just a standard line. It may be true in your case, but the phrase has lost all meaning and acceptance to me.

Good luck on a quick turn around. I do think they’ll fix the issue- how soon just depends on parts availability.

Just a quick point for those talking about “old school” dials - you won’t find any speedo drive cables and such feeding your cluster - it’s still fully electronic, just a different presentation layer. There is no reason to doubt the reliability of full-screen based dash clusters - the type of screen in use is not exactly new technology.
              Cheers

Just got the car back. They said they found multiple faults with the cluster. But VW require the dealer to carry out a "4 ring test" which takes around 4hrs as part of the steps to satisfy the warranty claim, so still a few hurdles to jump before this is rectified. So back to the stealership tomorrow.

Done the test and they determined the the display would be replaced under warranty. They don't have it in stock so another wait!

You’d hope so - if the dash ain’t working, it can’t be road legal?

Funny thing is the missus and I had booked this week off work months ago planning to go to the Gold coast (daughters b/day) but COVID put paid to that, took the week off anyway. The car is hers. So the tig has mostly been parked in the garage and we have been using my Analogue GTI. When I've dropped the car off at the stealer I've used their drop/off pick-up facility. They've told me its a 3hr job, but heard nothing today.

Picked the car up this morning, all good. They said it was an open circuit fault. Lucky it was under warranty! Click image for larger version

100% wouldn't want to be forking out $6k for the dash outside warranty.

Fortunately things like electronics usually die fairly early in life if they're going to fail. So these failures will get covered under warranty.

Interesting that it's the same part number. I guess that's dealer tax for you. No way I'd pay $5k for the display. Would certainly be looking at other options before handing over those sorts of $ for a repair.
