Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

You will most likely end up with understeer with the front sway bar. I've done the rear, and honestly, the car handles perfectly in bends now. My mechanic with an RSQ3 who also has an aftermarket rear swaybar prefers the handling of my Tig over his.
I would discuss the possible effects of having both sway bars fitted with Eurotune.

The guy at Eurotune seemed to say that the effects of the swaybar has more to do with weight distribution of the car rather simply to do with the front wheel or rear wheel bias alone.

I did ask if the front swaybar would counter the effects of the rear however he said it wouldnt and instead would further reduce body roll.

I would agree with your mechanic.

IMO, the reason most don't fit the front is because it is expensive to fit. The rear is a 30 minute job. The front is 1.5-2 hours (subframe drop) plus a wheel alignment.

There have been plenty of Golfs fit F&R. The effect is quite similar.

Agree that most of the improvement is in the rear sway bar anyway as the stock front sway bar is already a decent size (26mm from memory). As long as you don't go ridiculously big on the rear you should tighten things up without causing the car to oversteer.

The front is in the law of diminishing returns. It costs a lot more (including installation) for a modest improvement in handling. I did it on my gen1 Tig and bang for buck the rear bar upgrade was money well spent and the front was just when you ran out of things to modify and wanted to throw cash at the car. Of course if you were chasing track times then it's probably worth it but for daily driving duties the rear bar is all you really need.

Thanks for the informed experience information tigger73 - thanks to the great feedback on this forum I am going to do the rear sway bar, eibach springs and some ceramic front disc pads in January 2021 on my 2018 Wolfie and will report back ...

Bar diameter isn't a great measure of what the bar does. A lot of OEM bars are hollow and haven't been heat treated. They don't have the same torsional strength as an equal diameter, solid aftermarket bar that has been heat treated.

ID:	1859098I got this quote from Eurotune, the rear sway bar has also been added onto this for a total of $5500. I was one of the people that rushed to get the APR Stage II tune done and then rolled back to Stage I till I could sort out enough time for the hardware to be installed. I believe both the Front/Rear sway bars to be either racingline or HardingPerformance ones. Thoughts?

Thanks so much for all the information so far as well, its been very informative!

Haha I am curious about that, it could be good but will that ruin the longevity of the engine? I was going to go to Stage 2.5 and just do the intercooler.

It's basically then a tuned Golf R. They don't seem to have any major issues with longevity. Best to get a later revision IS38 turbo as through 2014-2016 they went through quite a few revisions.

                        • Eibach springs have arrived - 26.12.2021 ordered from Germany - sitting in my lounge room 5.01.2021.

                          • The Eibach springs (30mm lower) is on the mod list. But if I wanted it to feel less "boat-y" in turns, would you folks recommend springs or sway bar, or both?

Putting looks aside, which one would achieve a better/flatter turn in - springs or sway bar?

The sway bar will give a flatter turn-in with less body roll. Lowering springs for looks and a firmer ride.

                              • Personally, if the vehicle has more than 50k on it I'd fit a set of Koni or Bilstein dampers. So many improvements in ride, reduced tip-in velocity, spring control, etc
