  • So this happened (hail)

My Tiguan was hit in the Canberra hail storm on the 20 jan 2020. Still waiting for assessment to see what happens. The insurer has been frustratingly useless.

    Broke both windscreen spreyer

    Holy crap.

Paint stood up well. The panels took a beating!

With the pillars being dented, that’ll be a write off- surely?

Yes I'd expect this one to be written off. Seen others in a similar condition and they were a complete write-off/replacement.

I'd be onto your insurance company to make the assessment/decision. Should be a pretty straight forward one.

Most of the places where there is an angle and was hit the paint flakes off or is cracked.

When did the car get assessed? I'm not sure why it's taken them so long to be honest - should be pretty straight forward one I would have thought.

Do you have new for old policy?

There have been people I work with that have A pillar damage the assessor is saying they will just laser the “skin” off and roof off and replace. Though admittedly these are on sub 6 month old cars so suspect anything to get out of new for old.

With the roof, a pillar, electrical and water damage I do hope they do write it off, will be sad though been loving the tig. Trying not to get my hopes up that they do.

Oh don’t worry I have been chasing the insurance people, car finally got towed Sunday night. This after being told 3 different things in a week now on a fourth .

Could be worse at least it was a car and not the house.

I’ve worked with too many car repair companies to trust the quality of work that’s needed to repair a car with this damage.

I hope you either get a great repairer (your choice- not insurers) or its written off.

Sadly, most insurers and their ‘buddy’ repairers do a **** job and then live off the fact that they can mess customers around with procedures- rather than do it right first time and/or properly rectifying issues, as they’re brought up by the car owners. Saves them both money. No ****s given about professionalism and customer satisfaction.

If it’s repaired, be prepared to be 1000000% anal retentive before picking the car up and write to your insurer on EVERY little thing that you find wrong.

Be prepared to take your car back numerous times, to the repairer- after pickup

              Good luck.

Sad to see your Tiggy in such a state.
Both my cars were affected in the canberra storm.
Missus Skoda RS got smashed and most likely a writeoff (she is more than unhappy) - took two weeks to tow.
My tig is being fixed (pov pack 125tsi) ... most panels dented but the assessor reckons it is a fixer.
I might be able to convince the missus to convert from skoda to a new tig ... but mkt in canberra is going to be quite lively over the next few months due to all the apparent write-offs!

Shame to se the carnage mate!
Looks almost exactly like my Allspace - same accessories and all - almost like I was looking at my own car...shudder

Anyway, hope they write it off, and you get to replace sooner rather than later.

BTW, I see you have solar panels on the house - have you been up on the roof to check you don't have any damaged panels?
We've has a few at work needing replacement due to hailstorms...

Heh thanks mate. In reference to the panels, the hail looks to have been a few kms from our place. Mates panels and hot water system are gone but wouldn’t think the solar tubes would really stand up to much of that hail.

Ah bugger mate, we luckily only had one taken out so still have our vrs, the missus is the opposite of yours she’s wishing hers had been taken out too (or instead) but hers is a 2012.
Canberra will be interesting but Sydney isn’t too far and wouldn’t be the first time I’ve gone on a road trip for a car.

Hope you get back on the road quickly mate.

For those watching at home, it’s been classed as an economic write off (no chance of direct buy back). Combo of water damage and electrical according to the assessor, the panels they say they would have repaired.

                          Ah well.

Looks like Skoda is a writeoff with the insurance online showing 'awaiting settlement' and the insurance help desk lady telling me that someone from the total loss team will contact me soon(tm) about the finer details.

So decided to pull the pin and get the missus another car for the interim until the cash comes through ... sourced a 2018 Tiguan and surprised the missus absolutely loves it! Didn't take a lot of convincing after she saw the newer Skoda RS and hated the alcantara seats. It is what I was eyeing off to replace my 2011 Tig, so now whether or not to keep the older Tig after it has been fixed ...

The car yards were absolutely packed last weekend ... so definitely turning into a sellers market in Canberra at the moment ...
