  • OEM 18inch tyres on 2017 Tiguan 162 Highline

Just had my tyres replaced by VW because at least 2 definitely needed replacing (not surprised) and the other 2 were close enough (but I replace all 4 tyres each time with AWD cars anyway)

Was told that they'd be putting a new set of OEM Tiguan tyres on

Now I have a set of Continental UC6 when I could have sworn I had Pirelli's originally

Sure enough, the video they sent me of the Vehicle Health Check shows them checking tyre depth on a tyre with "Pire" stamped on the side. Unsure what Continental tyre would have that as part of the name

Anyway, wondering if anyone else can tell me what their OEM tyres were. I was absolutely impressed with the Pirellis but the Continental are an unknown quantity (and now especially worrying given the anecdote the service manager share about some other customer complaining his OEM Tiguan tyres lasted 20,000km)

    My 162 Highline MY18 came with 18" Hankook Ventus S1 Evo2 tyres.

Personally I will pick my own tyres when they need replacing.

Yup and I was happy to replace the tyres with the same tyres I originally had.

If only VW hadn't misinformed me!

Pirelli Scorpion Verde on my 20s.

I'll be getting Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres when it's time to replace them.

Continentals are generally quite soft and wear out quicker than other tyres.

            I feel like I've dodged a bullet

Perhaps those were the OEMs that lasted only 20000

Continentals are OEM (all 3 my current VW's have it) and better than any of the others except for the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S's. Softer, yes, but quieter and much better grip. Pirelli's are not even close as good.

The Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S's are better than all, except not OEM and quite a bit more expensive. Worth it though. the R and the Mustang will get the Michelins when its time, the others I'll stick to the Conti's, thanks.

Current sure - but my 2017 had Pirellis so ...

Ok, I got 40,000km from the Pirellis with ZERO issues in terms of noise, handling or braking.

As I was expecting a like for like replacement, am I unreasonable to expect 40,000km from the Contis?

My 2014 Amarok had Continentals from the factory .... at any given time there are at least 4 different brands being fitted to any model coming from the factory. Continentals, Pirellis, Bridgestones and Hankooks are all OEM and have all been fitted to 2017 models at the factory. It comes down to what is available on build day of your car in the factory .... there is no just 1 OEM tyre

No, 40,000km is quite do-able. The Amarok did 42,000km before replacing the 1st set of Contis (SportContacts too). It is also a much heavier car with greater stresses when braking and loading.

The Pirelli P-Zeros on my Mustang will (hopefully) do less than 20,000km. They are utter rubbish, especially when cold. Absolutely no grip and very high wear (did not think that combination was possible) . You really need to get some serious heat into them to get them to grip. Can't wait to replace them.

Must have deep pockets or very little time if paying the dealership markup.

I really doubt anyone is getting a proper OEM tyre in Australia unless it's a special order. Most tyre dealers aren't aware that some vehicles have a specific build tyre fitted at the factory. eg: the CL9 Accord Euro Sport had a unique 225/45r17 Bridgestone RE040 and the high speed handling was noticeably different from the generic RE040 bridgestone. Even Bridgestone Australia wasn't aware there was a specific build tyre available (at $400 each)
