17" Tiguan wheels for 2018 R-Line

Hi GJM,

The wheels/tyres on the R-Line look ok to me, I'm assuming you're happy enough with their appearance ? Has the speedo difference been noticeable/acceptable ?

Attached is pic of TiguanR on 235/65 R17 tyres on Audi Q5 Rims.The rims are E8Jx17 H2 ET39. The car rides better on rough roads and is quieter in coarse bitumen. Handling under normal conditions seems OK. 17 inch wheels fit OK as brakes are the same size on all Tiguans.

Took Tiggy for 80km test yesterday. Tiggy speedo at 102km/hr was 100 km/hr on GPS. Car handling at legal speeds 110km/hr was normal.

My speedo reads 105km/hr when the GPS is at 100km/hr which lines up with above given that you're running ~3% larger tyres.

So you're still on the "safe" side.

Are you running hub centering rings? I'd recommend getting a cheap set if you don't.

I think they look OK even with the Audi centre caps.

I got alloy centre rings off eBay for $20 posted ex Melb. They were excellent fit. I froze the centre rings and put the wheel in the sun to warm it, then tapped the rings into the wheels.

I ran the wheels a couple of times without the rings and felt a slight vibration, so they help.

I have ordered centre caps as per your post #28. The OEM Audi nut covers are US$60 each..ouch.

I may not change the nut covers , shall wait and see what they look like. Audi symbol is not intrusive.

Good to hear. Yes I'd consider them essential when fitting Audi rims as it's almost impossible to align the wheel properly on the axle by just doing the bolts up.

Would be interested to see the clearance on the front as this is the larger disc (340mm vs. 312mm).

Thanks for the update, much appreciated. Thanks also for the photos and your other comments about your experience in changing to 17" rims/tyres, you and tigger73 have helped greatly with my decision to do this too. I'll be picking up the wheels tomorrow, and will fit them next week when the center rings arrive.

Having fitted them yourself, were they already balanced ? Have the wheels been aligned, or do you plan to do that ?

If they are 2nd hand rims/ tyres then they are probably balanced OK. You won't know until you drive it.

Changing wheels doesn't change the alignment. Sometimes if the wheel offset change is significant, the steering can feel odd when turning. This can often be reduced by a slight adjustment to the toe (it's to do with toe out on turns). If you can't feel it, don't worry about it.

eg: when I went from 16x6.5 ET51 to 17x8 ET35 the turn in felt wrong. It was a toe out on turns issue. Most aligners won't have a clue what you are talking about...
