Got my gearbox replaced. Thank F I waited (more like got painfully delayed by the potential tuner) before I proceeded.

Now my gearbox is smooth as hell.. VW did good.

I have the turbo and exhaust in my bedroom just waiting.. not sure how I should wait.. maybe 1000kms?

APR can't tune my car so I'm going with a custom tune from Tune House.. any good bad reviews?

Also interested to know what went wrong with your gearbox..???

I’m surprised APR can’t tune your car, which shop did you go to? German Performance Garage are the master dealers for APR in NSW, they might be able to help.

I went to a guy Strathfield. He does euros and resells Apr. He couldn't get it to work. He's supposed to do a lot of euros and he had golf Rs there being worked on. Couldn't do anything with my car. They said to keep calling back then after about 6 weeks of chasing I gave up. Parso was going to tune. He's a great bloke normally but he didn't follow me up once after calling him once a week for a couple of months. Got too hard. So going with tune house. They knew what was required with the install straight up over the phone.

As for the gearbox it was shonky as heck. Loud, clanky just awful never smooth. New one with the new bevel box is silky smooth..

From the Mk7 I take it?

I'm finding it interesting the difference in price with some brands.
The one from Whiteline seems decent, but the 034 from Autoinstruct is almost double in price?

Hi guys, a little off current subject. My 18 Tig has had the following upgrades.
APR stage 1 tune
APR turbo delete
APR turbo elbow
Resonator delete.

Car is booked in for stage 2 pipe and APR airbox along with TVR stage 2 + 2 on the DQ500.

I’ve also sourced an IS38 (S3) which has very low kays on the turbo for just under a grand.

Is the turbo swap a big job? Did you guys who have an IS38 do it yourself or get it installed? Obviously I will need a tune for the IS38 as well, just wondering what the labour component was like on the turbo swap. Also do you guys who have had the TVR done rate it? Quoted $1490. Thanks!

Word of advice is get the IS38 installed at the same time as the DP. The DP has to get pulled out to put the turbo in. Do it once otherwise you’ll pay for the DO install twice.

And yes TVR DSG tune is worth the $.

Hi Wolfsburger, do you mean TVS TCU tune? If so, I have the TVS TCU stage 2+ file (added boost on launch which I think is a stage 3 option) and it works a treat. It tightens the drive and removes the sloppy clunkiness that the OEM tune exhibits. It gives the box a new lease of life and works well with the APR IS38 ECU tune.

Agree with Tigger73, you’ll save some money doing the DP at the same time as the IS38 swap as the DP needs to be removed when fitting the IS38. You can also swap over the apr turbo muffler delete and turbo inlet pipe from the is20 to is38. Think about the r600 racingline box instead of the apr intake, the r600 box utilises more of the front surface area under the bonnet vs the apr one, tests show r600 provides better flow.

Actually APR intake is not much improvement over stock. You're actually better off with the stock intake and doing some basic mods to it and it'll perform better than the APR one.

Thanks Tigger and Melb Tiggy. I will definitely check the airbox choice. What sort of power should I expect atw and rough 0-100 times with the above mentioned? I’m hearing a lot of positives regarding the TVS DSG tune.
In regards to the DP, it’s a lot of bucks for a pipe, funds I don’t have right now. Is anyone doing custom downpipes on their Tigs? I understand there is a few headaches around sensors which is why most utilise the APR or similar DP. Thanks for your advice. 👍

I haven’t dynoed my car, but best vbox was 4.1seconds 0-100 with a very aggressive launch. With less aggressive launch I had times between 4.2-4.4 seconds. There are many variables involved, and having good tyres/traction, 1/4 tank of fresh 98 petrol (like BP ultimate), nice cold day for lower IAT all play a part in optimising performance.

CTS MQB downpipe does fit and is a fair bit cheaper than the APR pipe, I think around $1200 mark. The APR downpipe cost includes the cost of the stage 2 software upgrade though. If you are going the APR software route not sure the price for the software upgrade from stage 1 to is38, check with the dealer. ECU software should be able to code/turn off sensors to avoid any CEL due to higher flowing exhaust and sports/no cat.

Expect to pay about $600-$700 for IS38 install, if you do the downpipe at once will not cost that much for to install the downpipe.
