Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Has anybody had theirs off road, other than sand driving?
It depends on your definition of off road, some reckon that is any road that is not sealed, mine is it is off road if you might need a winch. Mine has been on a lot of unsealed roads with big rocks in some places and it is this type of surface that damages rims and tyres and is precisely why I didn't order an R Line with low profile tyres. I lightly touched a traffic island in our Golf Performance some time ago, exit one rim which can be repaired but the care needed to avoid this sort of stuff is just stupid.

Some light muddy forest trails may be OK, but I wouldn't risk it with much more than that.
Plus the 4 Motion isn't quite true 4WD, plus low clearances mean, I'll just stick to beach driving.

So reporting back - the tiguan drives nicely down the beach as long as its hard, as soon as there is a little bit of loose sand on the surface the wizards kick in and without moving the throttle position power is all but cut. I first noticed after happily driving down the beach then going to park up the beach where its a bit softer, lucky i had i bit of a run up.

The real issue was after a weekend of people driving past our camp site, the beach was relatively churned up, and i got bogged simply trying to drive back down the beach onto the hard sand - getting caught up in the tracks. i can't stress enough how much the throttle automatically cuts out when you need it to just keep going. so now I've lost all momentum and stopped. to try to keep going i ease on the throttle, slowly more and more, nothing is happening until boom, 3 jets of sand 3m in the air. The max tracks were useless, as the nothing nothing everything meant i simply burnt the knobs of the tracks. i ended up being being pulled out by a hillux that had no trouble getting around, was even towing a camper up the beach no trouble.

It could be that I’m absolutely useless, my last suv was a Freelander2 and i couldn’t get that thing bogged even when i tried.

Did you have the traction control turned off?

Sounds like traction control stepping in, happens on all 4wds no matter the size. It must be turned off every time you turn the car off and back on again as it automatically comes back on

                ^ This!!

I took ours to Capertee and it was pouring rain, so I turned off traction control and spun all four wheels in the mud. One thing I didn't like too much is that once you kiss the limiter once, it automatically goes into the next gear (yes in Manual mode).

[QUOTE=Oz85;1277537]Did you have the traction control turned off?

My understanding is it was switched off, as soon as you put it in off road mode you get a warning that traction control is off, mine doesn't have a physical switch. but i would also assume that is what is happening.

At the end of the day it was all good fun, had a good laugh with the group of people i was with, apparently it looked pretty cool with all the lights on and jets of sand in shooting in the air - something like the fountain shows out the front of a Vegas hotel and am happy to know the limitations of the system. but i don't regret getting the car, its still a pretty good rig on the road the tech, price, performance, meant it was a no brainer when we cross shopped it with a Discovery Sport.

Side note - when we were back on the road we had to stop and clean the sand out of the inside of the rims - about a 2cm build up I'm places, which really had the wheels off balance.

Hi DPS, this occurs with all automatic transmissions, not just VWs.

Also, if you are spinning wheels, try selecting a HIGHER gear.

There are a number of benefits of doing this. First, you have a greater control of the accelerator peddle which means your are less likely to spin the wheels so quickly and you can control the motor at a much lower RMP, again, giving you better control of your wheel slip, if it occurs.

I was being a knob on the mud on private property, tried to do donuts in the car too haha

                      I still haven't grown up.

                          No one really lol

Wife is pretty good, as long as I'm doing anything silly on private property or on a race track, I get to sleep in the bedroom not the couch

In saying that, I might change the Haldex settings soon and report back. Might be doing a weekend trip soon and hitting up some offroad areas. Will report back on how much sand in the air and wheelspin I can achieve

Thread bump. Thinking of taking mine on to the beaches around South East Queensland over summer but not keen on using the standard 20 inch tyres.

Does anyone know what other VW/Audi wheels will work? Thinking I might pick up a set of older 17s and put some meatier tyres on.

Doing this to stop from buying another 4x4! Want to try the Tiggy to see if it will work for basic beach driving and basic off road before spending more $$ on another car.

I bought some older Tiguan 16" and put AT's on - great option!

Great! What size tyres are you using and do you have any pics of the wheels fitted?

Edit: Just found your other posts with the info and pics. I wonder if all the Mk2 Tiguans have the same front brake size?

I've located a set of these wheels, could grab them to test fitment over the brakes before putting tyres on them.
