After thinking about the prices and specs over night, it occurred to me that it's actually the Trendline (47,990 +OR) that compares most closely to the SR5 (52,490 +OR) on paper and that both the Highline and Ultimate are two models that move utes upmarket.

After giving it thought I'm very happy with the pricing indeed

We have heaps of cars coming, mostly Trendlines and Highlines. We know there will be a shortage of Ultimates but we haven't seen our allocation of those yet. Not sure exactly when we're getting them, the crazy part is we generally don't know exactly until they actually arrive in the dealership. I'm going away on training for it next week but training runs for two weeks and they generally try to do that before cars arrive. Unless they decide to overlap this time, the press release says the actual release is March 1, which is the first I've heard of that!

You'd buy it over the Mazda or Ford for the same reasons you buy a Golf over a Mazda 3/Ford Focus. Quality, the driving and handling, refinement and safety, it's the first 5 star rated dual cab ute - no other ute is finished as nicely as the rok

I keep hearing people say this, which is understandable. However just like when we used to say "you can't really tow anything without a V8 or a big 6", now people have to wrap their head around a very capable & competent 2 litre performing as well as a less efficient 3 litre. The big thing for me is an Amarok with a Touareg engine would probably be $75k. Europeans don't hand out big engines for free. I agree it would be awesome, however, a much lower price is also very attractive. How long do you wait? It may be 2013, it may never come. Anyway let's just drive one first, I personally can't wait.

Holy cow......I thought they were going to be priced competitively? Competitive to what? That's top shelf every step of the way. Not even trying to be a class leader....nearly all the others come in under the 2wd price.....as for $Motion....ten grand extra for the 'luxury' of a rear diff!! Truck that.

So VW are obviously not serious about trying to sell more than a few. No surprise but still a shame.

So no Amarok for me. If I had that sort of cash I'd still get a T5 DOKA 4Motion instead....except that I don't. And probably never will.

It was always going to be expensive. It is recreational ute not a workhorse and it carries VW badge.
Some good utes are soon to be released - ranger bt 50 twin and hilux facelift ...

Ok, just to clarify, I agree with Sam that having all current varient bar a BT-50 on site, the Trendline is closest in spec to all the others, which is priced at $47,990 + ONC

            Comparison?
            Hilux SR5 TD Man: $53,690 +ONC
            Narara ST-X 4x4 TD Man: $ 54,989 INC ONC
            Triton GLX-R 4x4 TD Man: $ 44,990 +ONC

The fact that there is also the Highline and Ultimate above the trendline, I would say that VW have actually been very clever in their pricing. If you buy an ultimate amarok, you really will get something that none of the competitors can offer. Even when the T6 Ranger hits, ford were so paranoid about the Amarok (apart from the rubbish comments about towing) that they delayed the launch by (now) 18 months and as I believe after a discussion with an engineer, are still revising the rear suspension design.

            THAT BEING SAID:

VW have been stupidly arrogant with the amarok design. They have clearly approached the car with an attitude of "...we can make our car better than others, what need will there be for accessories. VW customers won't put accessories on our cars, our cars are too good for that...".
Examples? Boxing in the entire rear corner of the tub, surrounding the tail light with sheet metal. Narrow and angled landings on the tub, ridiculous sized hols in the front corners of the tub, non removable crash beams on the front of the chassis, split clevis designs for front struts, welding the crownwheel in the front diff, creating their own sized eyelet bushes on the rear leaf springs and my favourite, using bloody triple-square drive cap screws everywhere!!

Next itteration will be interesting to see if they embrace customers better, realising peopl buy these cars to put accessories on them.

Sorry not buying Trendline is equivalent to SR5 - I believe, comparing specs its closer to SR visually and spec wise.

As for people buying the Amarok over the comp due to quality that is yet to be proven yet the other mainstream brands have history while VW is new to this class - VW should have priced it better IMO.

go through the spec sheets phaeton.

SR5 only has these things over Trendline

                    Bluetooth (optional on Trendline)
                    17" Alloys ($990 on Trendline)
Steering Wheel Audio Controls (Not available on any Amarok)
6 Stacker CD (Not available on Amarok but MDI Optional)

So when you option them equally, the Trendline is still around $3k ahead.... (and gains semi auto climate control not available on Hilux)

To be honest I was a little disappointed with pricing, have requested quotes (on a Highline) via my lease providers so will be interesting to see what Fleet discount I get.
Have really been trawling the spec sheets, and agree with some of the comments re Trendline v SR5, BUT.......
have realised that there is NO cruise control........ wtf?????
Will likely also request a quote on a Trendline with arch extensions and 18"s
                      Cheers

Not that I care but Trendline does not have chrome rear bumpers which visually give the Hilux more street cred.

What are the differences between the STX which sells for $38,888 driveaway and Trendline ?

BTW I'm not tryng to put the Amarok down just understand why VW have priced it higher than what I was expecting - I guess the main aim was to below Hilux which they achieved and I knew they would be priced highly compared to competitors not this high though.

Pleased to hear that Sam, but please direct me to where that is listed on the spec sheet?
I specifically went looking for it because I couldnt recall seeing cruise controls when I sat in one recently

                                Pricing

I don't think the competition prices are even close to market prices the triton GLX-R is selling for 37K with the works, VW may have a great package but may have missed the mark in regard to correct pricing
