  • ARB Amarok @ Vic 4WD Show (not 56k friendly)

Went to the Vic 4WD show at Wandin this morning after a tip off from a forum member...

    Amarok with ARB gear!!

This thing was hot, the bull bar looked awesome on it. Had a chat with a few of the guys from ARB, everyone seems extremely impressed with the car overall - all bodes very well for the launch this week!!

Whilst I have no doubt the kit is of a very good build quality, why do bullbars have to miss out on style??
The cut line on the end of the bars dos not match the cut line of the flared guards......... v v VERY sloppy.....

Yea, bit of an ugly bull bar, but then again, which ones isn't? (well, most are imo)

Dad was going to this, pity he didn't! (I'm trying to twist his arm into getting one )

the cut line to the guard does actually fit, it just looks wierd in photos for some reason. Maybe the shape of the flare and the shape of the guard is slightly different but the edges do fit together.

Hopefully not too close....then even a smack from a low flying galah would send the bar back into the flares. ARB's airbag bars have very dynamic mounts and this makes them rather mobile. Safe. But mobile.

I remember a Discovery that had three bonnets replaced in succession after smacking roo's with its ARB bar. The foolish & stupid owner then welded up the mounts in disgust....never sure what happened after that but I'd hate to smack a roo after his little mod.

                    Hey Sam,
You emailed some further pics of the suspension mods. Just curious about the angle of the driveshaft / CV joint. Looks fairly aggressive which to me spells early wear and failure of the CV. Anyone (Gavs ) able to comment?

ntboozer, you have raised a very valid point, hence why we have only generated a lift of 20mm. To clarify some of the questions that your post will undoubtedly start:

Suspension lift is measured as a rim-to-guard figure and it is an expected average. Why only expected? well, VW themselves that there is a 40mm variation in tolerance for ride height so you might get 20mm or you might get 5mm, it is all vehicle dependant.

The Driveshaft angle. From factory, the angle is almost identical. Due to the front end geometry, we have only changed the length of the strut/spring combo by 5mm which with our testing, has had no perceivable wear on the CV joints, however, we still don't know how long they're expected to last from the factory anyway so your guess is as good as mine! If it's like my golf, you would replace them anyway at 100,000kms!

The other thing to remember is that our struts etc visually stand out more, especially with a bar on the front as the oe bumper does hide a fair bit.

The ARB bars look odd on the Hilux too (compared to the Toyota factory steel bull bar). The saddest part though is that the canopy is the standard plastic/fibreglass item, which always come with gaps you can fit your hand through. I guess there will never the the economy of scale necessary for the much nicer steel offerings.

I think you might want to actually look at the fitment of a canopy on the car before passing judgement instead making generalized comments. As for the steel canopies already on the market, if you ever do the canning stock route in one, you will need 3 trips to pick up all of the parts all over the track.

Another point on the above comment, the factory hilux bar is nowhere near as strong as one of the folded-wing bars, you hit a roo with the wing on an OE hilux bar and you will destroy the front corner of the car.

And I think any of the steel bars on the market make the front of the hilux more appealing, as a designer I would slap the person who designed that car in the mouth, it is a horrible looking car from the front!

So where is this ARB 'Rok' living? Is it doing the show circuit or sitting at an ARB store? As someone who didn't get to the 4x4 show I'd love to drop into a 'local' ARB store to have a look.
